Pick the right products

L'Oreal Paris

Stop washing your hair with shampoo and conditioners that contain sulfates in them–please! Sulfate strips hair color and natural oils you need to keep your strands soft and silky. L'Oreal Paris EverPure Sulfate-Free Color Care System Moisture Shampoo ($7) is good stuff.

Don't wash your hair every day

If you dye your hair, you should NOT be washing it every day. Unless you want your color to fade out right away. Try washing every two to three days or every other day if your strands are on the oilier side. Refresh hair in between shampoos with a dry shampoo. Try Blow Pro Dry Shampoo ($20).

DIY it

Believe it or not, at-home hair masks using all natural ingredients can make a BIG difference when it comes to maintaining hair color. Try a protein treatment by mixing one egg yolk with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and two tablespoons of coconut oil. Apply throughout dry, dirty hair from roots to ends and leave it on for at least 15 minutes before rinsing out.

Protect it

A lot of women don't realize that UV rays could largely trigger color fading. I recommend wearing big, floppy hats during the summertime. Or if it's not for you, try coating hair with coconut or argan oil to protect it. I really like Josie Maran Argan Oil Hair Serum ($30).

Don't wash with hot water

No one should be washing their hair with hot water but this is especially the case if you have color-treated hair. It further damages and dries out strands. Stick to cooler water even if it doesn't feel as good.
