I've lost a lot of hair over the past year or so. My strands have been to hell and back after some bad heat-styling decisions and much damage. Right now my hair is still slowly recovering from everything, but I've finally managed to get the thinning to stop.
I've been nurturing, nourishing and styling my hair for years, but no one ever told me that heat-styling could ruin your texture and even lead to hair loss. Ugh! When I first noticed my hair was thinning out, I literally cried. But these days I'm putting on my big girl pants and fighting hair loss. Here are seven tips that are helping my hair grow back thicker and healthier!

Get a haircut
The first thing I did when I noticed my hair was thinning and my ends were splitting, was get a professional haircut. I initially had 3 or 4 inches trimmed off along with layers to help make my mane look thicker. Now I get trims every 2 or 3 months to cut off the remaining damaged hair. Next week I plan on doing another big chop!
Change your diet
I always say if it wasn't for my healthy eating my hair would probably be in even worse shape. You want to make sure you're getting enough protein, vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. I eat plenty of nuts, salmon, eggs, beans and greens. Also, biotin supplements do wonders!
Look into growth treatments
There are tons of growth-boosting treatments that can help stimulate your hair follicles and stop shedding. I highly recommend Phyto Phytocyane Revitalizing Serum ($65). It's a little pricey but so worth it!
Give yourself a scalp massage
I massage my scalp at least once a week using Carol's Daughter Lisa's Hair Elixir Fortifying Scalp Spray ($22). It's made with cedar leaf, rosemary oil and camphor oil which helps sooth an irritated scalp as well as stimulate blood circulation which helps stimulate growth. I'm obsessed!
Change your shampoo
I suggest switching to a sulfate-free shampoo that boosts volume, like L'Oréal Paris EverStrong Thickening Shampoo ($6).
Do a deep conditioning treatment
Do a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week to help repair and strengthen weak, damaged hair. I love SheaMoisture Yucca & Baobab Anti-Breakage Masque ($9).
Use oils for deep conditioning
I like to do an ultra-hydrating oil blend once a month to help moisturize and nourish my damaged hair. I add two tablespoons of olive oil, two tablespoons of coconut oil and two tablespoons of almond oil in a small bowl then blend. I work the treatment into my hair from roots to ends and then cover with a plastic bag or shower cap. I leave it on for at least an hour before rinsing out. It leaves my strands stronger, softer and shinier!
Try parting your hair on the side
Some experts recommend to try parting your hair on the side, so that it takes attention away from your crown and makes hair thinning less evident.
Try castor oil
Alone or with other essential oils, like jojoba, castor oil is effective to help regrow hair. You can massage into the scalp once or twice a week and leave overnight. Check out some great tips and more info on using castor oil here.
Manage stress
Whether you have to do yoga or just hit the gym a couple of times a week, trying to manage your stress is key to controlling hair loss. Besides extrenal issues, stressing out about actually losing your hair can make it worse. Take it easy and know there are remedies–10 here to start with!
