Salma Hayek was looking good yesterday, hanging out in West Hollywood with her 6-year-old daughter, Valentina. She was dressed in a simple but stylish outfit and instead of wearing her hair sleek and straight like usual, she was finally rocking her natural curls. I loved it! But how the heck is Salma keeping those curls so bouncy and frizz-free during the summertime?

I have always had a love-hate relationship with my curls. I love that I was born with natural curls that most chicas would kill for, but I hate how hot and humid climates instantly turn them into unruly frizz and poof. Curly hair tends to have a mind of its own, so the trick is learning how to tame it, regardless of the season. Here are five ways I keep my curls under control all summer long!

Swap out your shampoo
I've said this before and I'll say it again, the trick to controlling frizz and keeping your curls soft and healthy is using the right shampoo. Most formulas contain sulfates and harsh detergents that strip hair of its natural oils, leaving your rizos frizzy and dry. Try a co-wash, like Carol's Daughter Hair Milk Nourishing & Conditioning Cleansing Conditioner ($12) that's going to cleanse and also moisturize.
Hydrate
Lack of hydration whether it's from humidity-dense environments, sulfate-filled products or constant heat-styling will not only dry out your hair, but lead to frizz. Make sure to apply a generous about of conditioner after shampooing and work a leave-in formula, like Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner ($11). It deeply moisturizes and repairs dry, damaged hair!
Do a hair treatment
Keep curls healthy and nourished by applying a hair mask from roots to ends at least once a week. I'm obsessed with Mixed Chicks Detangling Deep Conditioner ($14). It helps restore moisture balance to your curls, detangles and instantly eliminates frizz.
Use oil
While my hair is freshly washed and still damp, I like to work in a light-weight oil, like Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil ($48). It fights humidity, controls flyaways and leaves my curls super soft and shiny!
Get a trim
To prevent frizz and split ends, get a trim every three to six months. Trust me, it makes a BIG difference! In between hair appointments, apply Carol's Daughter Monoi Repairing Split End Sealer ($20).
