It's crazy, but when it comes to our nails a lot of things can go wrong. And that's because our nails are super sensitive small cells that are prone to loads of damage. "If you were to look at the nail under a microscope, it actually looks like layered roof shingles," Dana Stern, M.D., a New York City-based dermatologist told Refinery29.com. "So, these cells are very delicate and the nail is actually extremely absorptive. It's about 10 times more absorbent than skin."
If you want to get your nails it tip top shape it's important to know what kind of habits can ruin them. Here are five habits that are probably damaging your nails!
Too much water exposure: Ever noticed how soft and bendy your nails get after a long shower? That's because like Dr. Stern says, our nails are "extremely absorptive." Too much water exposure can cause them to expand, soften and make them more vulnerable to breakage.
Seasonal weather changes: The same way your skin dries and cracks during the cold seasons, so can your nails. Rapid changes in weather can brutally effect your nails so make sure to keep them moisturized all the time.
Lack of vitamins: Brittle nails can be a sign of lack of vitamins and minerals in your system. Try taking biotin supplements and make sure you're getting enough proteins, amino acids and B vitamins in your diet.
Always wearing nail polish: Constantly wearing nail polish might prevent your nails from breaking, but not taking a break in between manis can weaken your nails with time and even lead to stains.
Peeling your polish off: If you see your nail polish chipping, whatever you do, DO NOT peel it off! Not only are you peeling the polish off but you're also peeling off a layer of your nail cells which can leave them weak and prone to breakage.
