Jennifer Lopez shows us how NOT to do red lips

Jennifer Lopez normally always appears flawless to me, but I have to admit she was looking kind of funky at the Fox TCA party in Pasadena, California Monday night. The former American Idol judge showed up in a hot hip-hugging leather dress that showed off her curvy bod, but homegirl's makeup was totally off. At first, I couldn't even pinpoint what the problem was. She sort of looked like her wax figure at the Madame Tussads museum. And then I realized that lipstick color combined with those done up eyes just wasn't doing it for her!

I've met so many chicas who think they can't pull off red labios. But honestly anyone can (including J.Lo). As long as you know what you're doing, red lipstick can actually look incredibly chic. The trick to rocking a red pout or any bold color lipstick for that matter, is to keep the rest of your look simple. Here are some of the rules to sporting red lipstick!

Do prep your lips: Nothing looks works than a feathered red pout. Make sure to first buff away chapped, lip skin with a scrub, like Fresh Sugar Lip Polish ($23). Follow with a balm to keep lips smooth and soft.

Don't chose the wrong shade: Anyone can rock red lipstick, it's about finding the best shade that suits your skin tone. If you have a fair or light complexion look for a color that consists of cool undertones. Medium and dark chicas look better with an orangey-red shade that brings out their skin's warm undertones. For a color that works on everyone, try MAC Cosmetics Lipstick in Ruby Woo ($15).

Do line your lips: To prevent your color from bleeding, make sure to line your lips with a lip pencil in a similar color to your lipstick. This will help keep the color in place.

Don't wear red lips with a smoky eye: Red lips with really made-up eyes means total overkill. Add some black liner to your upper and bottoms lashes lines along with a few coats of mascara and you're good to go. A winged cat-eye works too!

Don't go crazy on the hair: Bold red lips draw a lot of attention as is. Try to keep your hair as simple and sleek as possible.

Keep your skin flawless: Because the rest of your makeup is going to be minimal, you want to make sure your skin looks dewy and flawless. For an even complexion, try applying a CC cream, like Tarte Colored Clay CC Primer ($34). It color-corrects and covers flaws.
