I thought I heard it all when it came to strange beauty trends, but the new surgically implanted eyeball jewelry one has to be the weirdest fad ever. Lucy Luckayanko, a 25-year-old Russian woman, is actually the first person in New York to undergo the procedure which has already been done in Europe and Los Angeles. It's literally a platinum heart implanted in her eyeball. Now why in the world would someone want this? For Lucy, she's sees it as her "conversation maker." Seriously?

"I will be able to tell people. It will be unique. It will be sort of my unique factor," Lucy told Fox 5 News. The doctor who performed the procedure on her is actually the famous, "creepy Craigslist doctor," Dr. Emil Chynn. You may not remember him, but he's the loco who posted an ad for a rent-free apartment in Manhattan a few years ago looking for a female roommate who would walk on his back for an hour a day, cook, and help him find a wife. Now he's surgically implanting eye jewelry in people's eyeballs and making headlines. Interesting right?
Dr. Chynn performed the surgery on Lucy at Park Avenue Laser Vision in Manhattan. It was done by opening up the eyes with a speculum, then making an incision with scissors between the white of the eye (also known as the sclera) and the clear part of the eye (the conjunctiva). Dr. Chynn then placed the heart-shaped jewelry piece within the superficial conjunctiva membrane. And that's it … Ouuccch!!!!
The nutty doctor swears the procedure is safe. He even told ABC News that he's hoping he could perform it on a celebrity on TV to prove it. But the American Academy of Ophthalmology doesn't seem to agree with him. They're actually warning people to avoid the surgery at all costs. It hasn't been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration because they believe that it's risky and can lead to blindness from ocular infection, bleeding beneath the conjunctiva, perforation of the eye, and even conjunctivitis.
Whatever happened to the days when women made up their eyes with simple mascara and eyeliner? Even colored contacts (as silly as I find them) seemed somewhat reasonable. But a piece of metal jewelry implanted in your eyeball that can cost you up to $3,000 bucks is just straight up stupid. Sorry, but I'll stick with basic eye makeup thank you very much!
