Whenever I introduce people to my abuela, they can never believe she's 85 years old. The woman doesn't just have a flawless complexion (smooth, even skin tone with minimal wrinkles) but she still has a head full of healthy hair. And it makes perfect sense considering how well she takes care of it. She's been using old-school Latina hair tips on her strands for years and believe me, if you took a few tips from her your hair would look fabulous too!

Instead of splurging on pricey shampoos and conditioners, she treats her fine, straight hair to all-natural DIY treatments on the regular. She also tries to stay away from heat-styling as often as she can. Instead she uses those soft foam rollers from back in the day to boost up the volume. If only we all thought like Abuela right? Well who says you can't start now? Check out a few healthy Latina hair tips we could all learn from our abuelitas!

Treat dandruff with apple cider vinegar

I don't know about you, but whenever I try anti-dandruff shampoos and treatments, they never do a thing for me. The only fix I find that gets those pesky white flakes out is rinsing my hair with apple cider vinegar, just like Abuela always recommends.
Get silky hair with avocado

Every time my hair starts looking dull and feeling dry, I whip up one of my abuelita's favorite hair conditioning treatments–an avocado hair mask! Just mix egg, avocado, extra olive oil or coconut oil with honey and apply it all over your head, from roots to ends. Leave on for 15-20 before rinsing out, and expect fabulously shiny hair!
Use soft rollers

Curling irons might give you perfect curls, but they can also cause some serious heat-damage. Instead try setting your hair in foam rollers the night before. It works just as well, but keeps strands healthy. I like Goody So Finished Foam Hair Rollers ($6).
Try hot rollers

They might use heat, but they're still less damaging than your hot tools and super easy to use! Try Conair Ceramic Extreme Instant Heat Hair Setter with Heated Clip Technology ($22).
Do pin-up curls

Another healthy hair method for voluminous curls. Try Ricky's No-Crease Pastel Bow Clips ($6). They hold any style without the pesky creases!
Get a hooded dryer

Even if you don't like setting your own rollers, a hooded dryer is also perfect for heating up a deep conditioning hair treatment. And who says they're all expensive? Check out Hot Tools Ionic Anti-Static Salon Hair Dryer ($55) for an affordable option.
Don't shampoo everyday

It took us years to finally get that you don't have to wash your hair every SINGLE day. But our abuelitas knew this all along! Thank goodness for dry shampoo right?
Wrap your hair

Before the flat-iron days, our abuelas maintained sleek, smooth strands by doing dubis, in other words, wrapping their hair around their head using clips or bobby pins. It really works!
