Getting the kids ready to go back to school is fun, but it also reminds me that I'm not as up on trends as I used to be. Oh, don't get me wrong–I can still look cute when I want to. But my 12-year-old daughter thinks my moda is SO last year. She's been insisting on picking out all her own clothes since she was 5 years old and now that she's almost a teenager, it's even harder to keep up with what's cool.
So I took her shopping and let her teach me. Here's what the kids are wearing this back-to-school season:
Hoodies: Not just your old gym clothes anymore, hoodies are cute and colorful and available in all kinds of cool styles. Plus, they're great for layering.
Jeans: Luckily for us, jeans never go out of style. I remember I used to ask my Mami for "pegged" jeans when I was my daughter's age. She used to take regular jeans and make the leg narrower with her sewing machine. Today's kids have it easier. You can find all the cool skinny styles in a variety of colors.
Graphic tees: I have to admit, I love graphic tees even for myself. And they look so cute on kids! I like to let the kids pick their own to let their personalities shine through.
Cool kicks: Of course no outfit is complete without the right shoes. The trick here is to spend wisely and look for quality AND a good price since my kids never seem to fit into shoes for longer than a season.
Backpacks: I love the options available! My kids have always like a character backpack but as they get older they also look for something sturdy that will fit heavier books.
Uniforms: One thing I loved about my escuelita is that I didn't have to get all fancy to go to school–I just wore a uniform! They're awesome and classic and never go out of style.
Making sure the kids are stylish and comfortable goes a long way to getting the school year started off right. I love it when they're happy with all the nice, new things that make them feel cool and special, and when I'm happy when my wallet doesn't take too big a hit.
