Struggling with hair loss? You're not alone. In fact, around 60 percent of women experience hair thinning or hair loss at some point in their lives. I'll never forget the first time I dealt with it. I was a stubborn senior in high school and had spent months dyeing, straightening, and pretty much putting my hair through a ton of torture. One day I was detangling my hair in the shower and found myself pulling out loads of knotted hair from my hair brush. Luckily a drastic chop and a few natural remedies was all I needed to get my tresses back in shape, but for most women hair thinning isn't such a quick and easy fix.

See your doctor
Hair loss could be a result of a hormonal change caused my menopause, pregnancy, or even an overactive thyroid. Before trying over-the-counter treatments, schedule an appointment with your doctor and see if they can run some tests to see what’s triggering the problem.
Take vitamins
Lack of vitamins and nutrients can cause hair loss. Try incorporating foods that are rich in iron and zinc. Or try supplements.
Switch up your products
Start using a volumizing shampoo that’s specifically designed for thinning hair. I recommend the Aveda Invati Exfoliating Shampoo ($25). It deeply cleanses while also restoring hair’s strength.
Try a scalp treatment
A scalp treatment, like the Alterna Haircare Caviar Clinical Daily Root & Scalp Stimulator ($36) is infused with vitamins and nutrients that help stimulate the scalp and promote hair growth. It’s also light enough to use daily without weighing down your fragile strands
Try a natural fix
I’ve always heard that rosemary oil works wonders when it comes to thinning hair. Grab a bottle at your nearest health foods store or botanica and massage a small amount onto your scalp for at least two minutes. Try doing this before every shampoo. I like the Weleda Rosemary Hair Oil and Natural Conditioner ($17).
Have more protein
Two to three 3 oz. servings of protein are recommended to help strengthen hair and promote growth. Not a big meat eater? Try incorporating more dairy and beans into your diet.
