Home remedies: Cure all summer maladies with these homeopathic recipes

I LOVE summer and all the fun outdoor activities that come along with it, but chilling at the beach or by the pool can wind up wreaking some serious havoc on my skin and hair. I'm talking everything from dry, damaged tresses, sun burned skin, to pesky manchas. With that said, not everyone has the time or the money to hit the spa. I know for sure that I don't!

So save yourself a couple of bucks with a few natural DIY beauty remedies you can do right at home, just like our abuelas recommend. Check out some of my faves below to guarantee you a flawless look all summer long! Best part? You probably already have all these ingredients in your kitchen. Score!

Repair chlorine damaged hair: A long day in the pool can result in some serious hair damage, leaving strands dry, frizzy and can even fade color. Try a hair repair conditioning treatment to help strengthen your tresses and boost shine. Simply add 1 egg, 1 tablespoon of honey, and 1 tablespoon of plain Greek yogurt to a small bowl. Mix with a fork and then apply the mixture to clean, damp hair. Massage it into your hair for about 2 minutes and then leave it on with a plastic shower cap for an additional 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse out with cool water and style as usual.

Soothe sunburned skin: Growing up whenever I experienced a sunburn or skin irritation, my abuelita would always fix up her all natural sábila sunburn treatment. Chop 1 cucumber, 1 carrot and toss into a blender with aloe vera gel. Apply the mixture to the affected areas and let it sit and cool on skin for 20 to 30 minutes. Do this for a few days in a row until skin heals.

Brighten dull skin: Get a fresh, glowy complexion with a papaya facial. Simply combine 3 tablespoons of mashed papayas with 2 tablespoons of mashed bananas, 2 tablespoons of milk, 1 tablespoon of coconut and 1 tablespoon of plain yogurt. Blend the mixture well and then let it cool in the refrigerator for about an hour. Then apply it to clean skin and leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse out with cool water and follow with an oil-free facial lotion to lock in moisture.

Remove manchas: Hours out in the sun can lead to dark spots. To lighten manchas, squeeze the juice from a half a lemon into a small bowl and then add about 2 tablespoons of honey. Blend and then apply the facial mask all over your face. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes and then rinse out with cool water. Do this once a week for noticeable results.

Prevent frizz: Try an avocado hair mask to help combat frizz and smooth hair. I love doing this treatment especially during the summertime. I normally just mash 1/2 of an avocado and add 1 teaspoon of olive oil or coconut oil, along with 1 teaspoon of honey. Then I blend it using a fork, and apply it all over my hair from roots to ends, leaving it on for about 15 minutes. Rinse it out with cool water and shampoo as usual.
