Believe me, an amazing haircut requires so much more than just a skilled stylist. It's about knowing EXACTLY what you want and knowing how to communicate that. "A new cut should be exciting and life changing, says Aveda's Global Artistic Director, Ricardo Dinis, who shared with me some advice on how to avoid a haircut disaster. 1. Bring pictures: "I love pictures, especially pictures of my clients with previous cuts that they really liked," says Dinis. "Seeing a picture of when you were happy and loved your hair most tells me more than a picture of a celebrity."A photo of yourself sporting a do you loved not only gives your stylist a sense of what you're looking for, but it will help them find a cut that will enhance what you already have, rather than fight against.
2. Ask questions: "There are the usual questions: How short will it be? Will I be able to do this at home? How often should I come back?," says Dinis who also suggest asking your stylist if they plan on cutting your hair with a scissor, razor, or thinning shears. "Some of the worst cuts I have seen in my experience have been due to bad tool choice, and stylist taking shortcuts. A good cut makes all the difference when it comes to doing it yourself and how it grows. Overall, you should be asking what you want to know about your hair and cut. And most important is you should seek a stylist who loves what they do, their love for your hair should be apparent from the minute they lay their eyes on it."
3. Ask how to maintain it: There's nothing worse than getting a style you can't maintain yourself. The trick is to have your stylist walk you through the styling of your cut."Make sure your dresser really explains to you how and when to use products," Dinis says. "Don't be afraid to ask them to put the brushes in your hand and give it go. You need to know what you can realistically achieve."
4. Inform your stylist: In terms of what you should be telling your stylist, "Your lifestyle, job, anything that will help your stylist understand what it is like to be you and what makes you feel beautiful and sexy. Be honest," says Dinis.
5. If you still wind up hating the cut: So what do you do if you still don't like the cut? "In most cases the right thing to do is go back. Don't give up, sometimes finding the right solution is finding the right stylist. If it needs to grow than find out what to do in the mean time. Get a plan from your stylist on the next time you need to come in. You're not alone," Dinis assures.
