Curly Qs: How can I keep my curls in control?

Curly Q: Why is my hair sometimes curlier than normal? What can I do to keep it controlled and defined?*__

This has happened to me a lot, especially during the summer season. I'll notice my curls get slightly tighter and frizzier. It could be humidity and weather changes, but sometimes it can just be the products that you're using. Certain products can strip curls of their natural oils causing them to shrink and poof. Check out a few of my tips below to help you keep those ringlets in control!

Use a sulfate-shampoo: I can't stress enough how important it is to cleanse your hair with a sulfate-free shampoo. Keep your curls soft and moisturized with a non-sulfate formula that will help fight frizz and hydrate without weighing down your tresses. I really love L'Oréal Paris EverCurl HydraCharge Shampoo ($7). It conditions hair as it cleanses.

Do an oil treatment: I like to keep my hair healthy by massaging my scalp with natural oils like coconut oil. It leaves my curls, soft, manageable, and incredibly shiny. And unlike most oils, it absorbs without leaving your hair greasy. You can find it any health foods store. Try Trader Joe's Organic Virgin Coconut Oil ($6).It's the cheapest and healthiest hair fix!

Do a deep treatment: Do a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week to keep curls hydrated and healthy. I'm obsessed with Mixed Chicks Detangling Deep Conditioner ($14). It restores moisture to your hair and instantly elimates firzz. I also love how easy it is to detangle my hair with this!

Stretch your curls: Stretch out tight curls with the Marc Anthony Stretch formula ($8). This helps tighter curls fall loser and longer and helps prevent puffiness, and pesky curl shrinkage.

Make it last: Hold your look with a light-weight defining gel that will prevent hair from frizzing, even in the most humid climates. I recommend DevaCurl Light Defining Gel ($19). It's done wonders for me!
