Save or splurge? Complexion correcting CC creams are put to the test

There's a new beauty product that's taking over this season and I'm not talking about BB Creams–I'm referring to its rival, CC Creams! The new medicine cabinet must-have is known mainly for its color correcting benefits and is formulated with loads of antioxidants, SPF, moisturizer, and other anti-aging ingredients to treat wrinkles, blemishes, and to brighten up your complexion.

While I wasn't totally sold on this, I needed to check out the so-called "amazing" CC cream for myself. So I tested out the highly raved about Olay Total Effects 7-in-One CC Cream ($22) along with its pricier competitor, Smashbox Camera Ready CC Cream ($42). Read on to find out which one did the trick!

The Olay Total Effects CC Cream claims to even out your skin tone while fighting seven signs of aging such as age spots, blemishes, wrinkles, and dull, dry skin. I haven't used the product long enough to notice any anti-aging differences, but I can tell you that it definitely left my complexion looking even and flawless! The interesting thing about it is that it only came in, like, 3 shades: Fair-to-light, Light-to-Medium, and Medium-to-Deep. I instantly thought to myself that none of them were going to work on my complexion. I'm not fair, light, medium, or deep–I'm tan! The Medium-to-Deep shade wasn't available so I went and took my chances with the Light-to-Medium. It looked crazy light when I applied it to my finger, but surprisingly blended in my skin really well.

It was just that sheer, but it gave me just a tint of color to cover those pesky manchas and to make skin look even. I couldn't believe how moisturized my skin felt and how luminous my complexion looked. Imagine how much better the results would have been had I tried it in the Medium-to-Dark shade?

The Smashbox Camera Ready CC Cream is supposed to also complexion correct, reduce the appearance of dark spots, blemishes, and moisturize. But I have to say this one really surprised me. It provided more shade options than the Olay option, but still none of them seemed to describe my skin tone. Seriously, c__an we make some CC creams in honey, tan, and caramel for us Latinas please?__ Anyhow, I tried it in the Medium, because it was either that or the Light/Medium or Dark.  I applied it on my skin and instantly noticed it was WAY too dark. Even after really blending in the color, my skin started to even out a little but it still didn't perfectly match my tone. It did a good job at covering any dark spots but it wasn't very hydrating. In fact my skin felt dry and looked kind of dull.

So it's pretty clear which one of these products made the cut: Olay Total Effects 7-in-One CC Cream. Now you know when it comes to CC creams you don't have to spend the big bucks!
