Whether it's straight, wavy or curly—every woman has a natural texture that makes her hair unique. And when it comes to getting a good haircut, understanding your hair type is key. Chicas, I can tell you from experience, that choosing a style that's right for your strands won't just play up your texture ( and of course make you look stunning in the process), but it also makes your hair a whole lot easier to maintain. If you have fine, thin hair
Fine hair tends to lack volume, so you want to go for a cut that’s going to add some lift and body. Try a shoulder-length style or shorter to help hair appear fuller. If you can’t see yourself sporting a bob, try a look that hits a few inches past the shoulders that’s filled with soft, angled layers. Blow-dry hair with a round boar bristle brush to get Jessica Alba’s flowy, curved ends. I love Spornette Porcupine Round Boar Bristle Brush ($11).
If you have loose curls
Certain curls need to grow past a certain length to fully form their natural pattern. If your curls look anything like Camila Alves’ you might want to consider growing your tresses past shoulder length because the weight of the hair will make ringlets look looser and more polished. Ask your stylist to add some long layers throughout to give curls shape. To prevent frizz, apply a styling mousse, like TRESemme Curl Care Flawless Curls Hair Mousse ($5).
If you have tight curls
Coily, tight curls like Christina Milan’s look great with a cut that hit right on the shoulders. The length makes it easy to maintain, but it’s still long enough to prevent hair from getting too big or poufy. Keep curls soft and defined with a curl cream, like Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner ($17).
If you have thick, wavy hair
One of the best things about wavy hair is its versatility. It’s easy to straighten and easy to curl. But if you’re looking to make the most out of your natural texture, try a long, slightly layered style. Just look how great Sofia Vergara looks! Keep waves looking tousled and polished with a texturizing hair spray, like L'Oréal Paris Everstyle Texture Series Beach Waves Spray ($7).
If you have thick, straight hair
Sleek, straight hair could look boring and shapeless past a certain length. Try a cut that’s slightly passed the shoulders with face-framing layers in the front and back for a trendy, sexy vibe. Boost some shine with a lightweight serum, like Got2b Glossy Shine Serum ($7).
