Sunscreen should be used always

The sooner you accept that sunscreen is not just meant for summer, the quicker you’ll reap it’s anti-aging benefits. Whether it’s sunny out or not, harmful UV rays can still take a toll on your skin, resulting in wrinkles, dark sports and even worse: skin cancer! Try a moisturizer that includes SPF 30 or 35. I love Cetaphil DermaControl Oil Control Moisturizer SPF 30 ($15). This non-greasy formula absorbs quickly leaving your skin with an oil-free, matte finish.

Hair masks are a must

To keep hair healthy and hydrated, substitute your regular conditioner at least once a week with a deep conditioning hair mask treatment. If you have thick hair, leave it on for about 15 minutes with a shower cap. For fine, thin hair apply just to your roots and rinse out after 5 to 10 minutes. Try Shu Uemura Moisture Velvet Treatment Masque ($68).

Get some sleep

Did you know that your skin regenerates during the night? There’s a reason why they call it beauty sleep! If you’re not getting enough rest, believe me it will eventually show on your skin. So start your new year right, by making enough time for bed time.

Get your right shades

Listen, we all want to sport the latest beauty trends, but it’s important to figure out if a particular color works well with your skin tone. The trick is to recognize what your undertones are. If you have cool (think red and pink) undertones, you should stick to colors that include pink, blue, or berry tints. This usually applies to pale/fairer complexions. If you have warm undertones (like gold or yellow), stick to shades that include a yellow, golden, peachy, or orange tint. If all fails, try colors that are universally flattering, like a pinkish coral lipstick. I love NARS Lipstick in Niagara ($24).

Switch it up

Sometimes it’s good to get out of the same ol’ beauty routine. As you start to age, your beauty needs start to change, so it’s good to try out new products and brands that meet your new and different needs.

Hydrate

Some women really do underestimate the importance of moisturizing (myself included). Not moisturizing your body regularly can lead to dry, chapped skin which in some cases can result in pesky stretch marks! Yikes! Make sure to hydrate your skin with a deeply nourishing body cream in the morning and in the evening (especially during the winter). My trick?  When you come out of the shower, try lightly patting down your body with a towel and then immediately apply a body oil. This will help your skin retain moisture much longer. Try Burt’s Bees Mama Bee Nourishing Body Oil ($8).

Cure dry lips

Keep lips smooth and soft by buffing them with a lip scrub, like Sara Happ The Lip Scrub in Red Velvet ($24). Then follow up with a deeply hydrating lip balm.
