I'm a hat girl, I have to admit. Especially during the colder months I like to cover my head in cute berets or slouchy beanies (like the one Selena Gomez has on here). But they often leave my hair unbearably flat or full of static. Luckily you don't have to sacrifice a good hair day for a stylish hat. There are a number of ways you can revitalize your tresses or avoid a messy hat hair situation to begin with. Check out a few of my pointers below to keep your hair intact for the next time your throw on a cozy winter hat!

Don't wear a tight hat

Try to avoid wearing hats that fit you snug. A fitted hat, is guaranteed to leave your hair flat and with a crease. Instead opt for a style that doesn’t sit too tightly on the head, like a slouchy beanie or loose beret. All hats tend to provoke static, so make sure to keep a small, portable hair brush, like Sephora Collection Sparkle Pop Up Brush ($10) in your purse just in case.
Apply some serum

A light hair serum can also work to fight static and tame flyways. Apply a small amount at the crown and to your ends before putting on a hat. I like Garnier Fructis Style Sleek & Shine Anti-Frizz Serum ($5).
Try a knitted headband

I always manage to avoid a hat hair disaster with a knitted turban headband, like Alice Hannah for TopShop Gem Embellished Headband ($40). This fashionable winter headpiece keeps my ears nice and warm, without flattening my 'do.
Don't wear wet hair under a hat

Try not to slip on a hat until your hair is completely dry. If your tresses are even slightly damp, it will not only flatten your style but leave a deep crease in the shape of your hat. If you have curly tresses, try blow-drying it using a diffuser attachment, like Soft ‘N Style Finger Air Diffuser ($6). Your locks will dry faster and without the pesky frizz.
Create volume

Before putting on your hat, add body to your hair with a volume-boosting spray, like Herbal Essences Body Envy Volumizing Spray ($4). Make sure to spray at the roots to help lock in volume.
Revive hair

For a quick pick-me-up, renew volume with a volumizing dry shampoo, like John Frieda Luxurious Volume Anytime Volume Refresher Dry Shampoo ($7). Spray about an inch away from the roots, and then gently massage hair at the crown for some instant lift. This one is small enough to fit in your purse!
