Learn how to get this chic black & white geometric manicure at home

Classic French manicures have been reborn this season with all kinds of cool, modern variations. There's the reverse French, the moon-mani and my new favorite–the sideways stripe manicure! This uber cool design is sleek and architectural. I especially love the black and white one pictured here, not just for its obvious tonal disparity, but also for the various stripes and shapes it includes.

This chic geometric design will look great against any of your bold and colorful winter outfits. I'd match this simple work of art with a rich, burgundy dress for my next holiday party. And as complex as this mani may look, its actually quite easy to pull off. Check out a few of my tips below to create a similar look at home!

Step 1: Start off by filing nails to your desired nail shape. This style looks great on most shapes, including square, round, and almond.

Step 2: Apply two coats of a white polish, like Zoya Nail Polish in Purity ($8) as your base coat.

Step 3: Once your base coat is dry, use a nail art polish in black, like Orly Instant Artist Polish in Jet Black ($5), to help create your stripes and shapes. A nail art pen is ideal for this kind of look because it includes a built-in, fine-tipped brush that's perfect for creating precise lines and designs.

Step 4: If you have trouble holding a steady hand to create your shapes, try using pieces of scotch tape to section off your lines and geometric shapes. Then, simply fill in using the black polish with gentle and precise strokes.

Step 5: Once nails have dried, apply a top coat, like Sally Hansen Insta-Dry Top Coat ($6) to help extend the life of your new mani.
