Winter usually brings many, many changes–the colder weather means that we have to switch up everything, from the most obvious things, like our gear, to the less obvious, like our beauty routine. You know what I'm talking about: beauty editors and experts everywhere remind us every year to switch from summer-appropriate cosmetics, to lighter, gentler formulas for the colder months. And high on their list of items that we have to change? Blush!
Experts, like our very own fashion and beauty writer Johanna Ferreira, recommend that with the start of the cold months, you switch regular powder formulas with creamier, more moisturizing cream blushes. So Johanna charged me with comparing two amazing cream blush formulas on the market: Tarte Natural Cheek Stain in True Love ($30) and Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush in 30 Candy Coral ($8).

I really liked the Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush: light, creamy, and with an interesting "bouncy" texture (it's the name, after all), it went on super smooth and not cakey at all. The color was perfect for my caramelish-olive complexion–and with 10 colors to choose from, it won't be hard to find a good match. My skin does tend to dry out during the winter time, so the creaminess of this rich color was a really quenching treat for my cheeks. Even though it feels light when you first apply it, it does become creamy as you blend it in. The one downside, though, is that the color doesn't seem to last. I'm not sure if it's because of my skin or because of the consistency, but by 2 p.m. the blush was completely gone–and I had applied it at 9 a.m.
However, the winner was TarteNatural Cheek Stain, which was a little pricier, but amazing! The color is intense on the bottle, but goes on sheer and silky. It's even smoother than the Maybelline blush, since it seems like it's more of a gel formula. And the color? Beautiful! There are almost as many colors to choose from as the Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush, so finding the right one for your skin tone should be easy also. But my favorite part? The Tarte blush had a yummy fragrance and was loaded with antioxidants, so I know it will be good for my already sensitive and broken-out (hello, post-pregnancy hormones!) skin. Besides, it pretty much lasts ALL day, since it's a stain, so I don't have to worry about touch-ups later on. I love that!
Even though the Tarte Natural Cheek Stain is a little on the expensive side, the fact that it lasts all day and also the skin-improving benefits sold me! Plus, the tub is pretty big, I'm sure it will last me for a while! Tarte was the clear winner in this challenge.
