Purple has been my favorite color since childhood, so I've been really excited to try out the new lilac smoky eye that I've seen just about everywhere these days (magazines, TV, you name it). The trend had its start after matte lavender lids were seen at Jill Stuart's Fall 2012 Fashion Week show in February.
The soft lavender tones adds a nice glam rock touch, but you can pull it off with just about any shade of purple. This feminine, rocker-inspired eye hue is actually quite wearable. You can tone it down during the day, or spice it up in a deep purple for a sexy, evening look, like Eva Longoria sported here. Check out a few of my easy-to-follow tips below to get this look yourself!

Step 1: Begin with a clean face and apply your foundation and concealer. Then take a eyeshadow primer like e.l.f Mineral eyeshadow primer ($3) to help create a longer-lasting and crease-proof eyeshadow look.
Step 2: Look for a palette that includes a variety of purple shades like Yves Saint Laurent Harmony for Eyes Eyeshadow Palette in Lilac Skys. Now take your light lavender shade and using an eyeshadow brush, apply it from your upper lash line all the way up to the brow bone.
Step 3: Then take a darker lavender shade from the palette and blend it into the crease area. Using an angled eye shadow brush, like Mineral Esssence Angled Eyeshadow Brush ($15), draw on the same dark lavender hue under your lower lash line for a dramatic smoky effect. For nighttime, you can add to the drama by using a dark purple eye shadow all over your lids; the color will complement the light lilacs, but intensify the look for a night out!
Step 4: Finish off your eyes with two or three coats of a full body mascara like Lancome Hypnose Drama Mascara ($26)
Step 5: Keep the rest of your look simple with a light touch of blush at the apple of your cheeks. Go for a soft pink shade that won't compete with your eye shadow, like Benefit Bella Bamba Pink Face Powder ($28), which works great on medium or dark skin tones. For lighter complexions, try Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush in Fresh Pink ($8).
Step 6: Finish off the look with a smooth and nude pout. Just dab on a little of a moisturizing lip balm like Smith's Rosebud Salve ($6).
