Color seems to be everywhere this autumn and your eyelids are no exception! This season we're substituting our blacks and browns for some shimmery peacock inspired emerald and green shadows. This stunning trend first appeared at the Fall 2012 Fashion Week shows of designers Robert Cavalli and Jason Wu (pictured here). I have to admit that I initially thought this smoky-eye alternative should be reserved only for the runway, but then I realized that if done correctly, this dramatic look is actually pretty wearable. Just promise me one thing, do NOT color coordinate your shadow with your clothes! The last thing you want is to look like you're stuck in a 80s time warp! This style looks best against winter whites, basic blacks and other neutrals. Check out a few of my tips below to help you nail this beautiful eye without looking like an actual peacock.
Step 1: Start off by prepping your eyes with an eye shadow primer like Urban Decay Eye Shadow Primer Potion ($20) to tamp down the oils and to help hold onto the color. Simply dab a little onto your lids and then dust with a loose powder.
Step 2: Then apply a mint or teal colored eyeliner like NARS Andy Warhol Soft Touch Shadow pencil in Heat ($24) onto your upper lash line. Then using your finger or an eyebrow smudge brush, smudge the liner up and into the crease.
Step 3: Then using an eye shadow brush, blend a brown/greenish eye shadow like MAC Eye shadow in Club ($15) (as used on the runway) over your lids, followed by a greener color like MAC Pigment in Kelly Green ($21), to add some dimension to the crease area.
Step 4: Apply a navy blue eyeliner like Maybelline Define A-Line Eyeliner in Navy Blue ($6) into the lash line and extend past the corner of your eye, creating a winged look. Then take the liner and line the lower lash line and softly smudge.
Step 5: Take a black pencil liner like Shiseido Smoothing Eyeliner Pencil in Black($20) and swipe onto the upper lash line, then blend using your finger. Finish off the look with two coats of a black mascara like CoverGirl LashBlast Volume Mascara in Very Black ($8).
Keep the rest of your makeup soft and bare by applying just a dab of lip balm or clear lip gloss to your pout.
