Take the day off: I normally would never encourage anyone to take a day off from work just to shop, but Black Friday is an exception! Since it's the day after Thanksgiving most people have the day off, but if you have to work, go ahead and take a personal day. The best sales usually take place in the wee early hours of the morning, so showing up at five in the afternoon is a big waste of time–not to mention the fact that everything will be picked over and all the best stuff will be gone.

Compile a list: The best way to avoid overspending is to make a list of what you actually want to buy–especially if you're getting a head start on holiday gifts for friends and family. You want to have a clear idea of what you're looking for so you don't get lost in the chaos or swept up in all the shopping frenzy!

Set a budget: It's so important that you set a budget and stick to it. The last thing you want is to overspend because that just defeats the entire purpose of shopping on Black Friday! If you find yourself filling your cart with a bunch of stuff you didn't initially plan on purchasing, ask yourself: Do I only want this because it's a great deal? Is this something I want, but don't need? If you answer yes to either of these questions, you can probably do without it.

Do your research: Before Black Friday, take some time to research the stores you want to hit up. A quick Google search will show you tons of leaked Black Friday advertisements. This will help you get an idea which retailers are offering the big bargains on the items you are looking to buy. The more specific you are with what you are trying to find, the easier it will be to plan your attack and find the best deals.

Make a plan: Figure out what time you're planning on heading out and which stores you want to visit, then get to shopping! Also, you might want to see if there are a few different locations of the same store close to your house in case stuff is sold out in the first one you visit.
