What woman doesn't love a hot new pair of shoes? I know I do! But for some reason, every time I go shoe shopping I wind up either spending more than I planned or I'm left with a shoe I can barely walk in.
It was just recently that I went shoe shopping to buy a chic pair of sky-highs for my sister's birthday. I walked into a department store telling myself: "I'm leaving here with a pair of heels that are actually comfortable and for under $100." How did I do? I bought the highest heels for $150. Not only was I uncomfortable most of the night, but in a way I wasted money because I can't imagine wearing those shoes anytime soon!
Most of us have found ourselves in this sort of shoe-ish situation. I know you're probably feeling my foot pain! But like any purchase, you should always have certain things in mind before you go shopping. Here are a few shoe shopping tips to help you get the perfect pair at the perfect price!

Make a Budget. When it comes to shoes, it's very easy for women to go crazy splurging. So make sure to create a budget based on what you can really afford. Also, try making a list of what you actually need. If you already own 4 pairs of ankle booties, chances are you don't need another one.
Shop later. Unless you plan on walking around the mall for 5 hours or more, it's probably not the best idea to shop early in the day. After a few hours your feet are bound to start swelling. So instead try shopping later in the afternoon, like after 5 p.m. Most stores close after 8 p.m. and if you still haven't found what you're looking for in 3 hours, it's probably best to leave it for another day! Shopping in desperation can only lead to a bad purchase.
Know your arch type. A lot of people tend to overlook this, but if you have flat feet, certain styles might not work well on you. Make sure to keep this in mind during your shopping and don't be afraid to consider custom insoles.
Try on three sizes: Like clothes, when it comes to shoes not every size is made equal. You may be a 7 in one particular brand and a 7.5 in another. Not all shoes are made alike. So to stay on the safe size and make sure you get the shoe that fits best, try on three sizes. First go with the shoe size that you usually go for. If it seems a little too big, try a half size smaller, and if it feels too tight try a half size bigger.
Walk in them: You don't really know how good a pair of shoes fits until you walk in them. Try walking around the store for a few minutes, this will help you determine if this shoe is actually a practical buy. If you find yourself struggling, then save your money and look for a more comfortable option.
Look good: I find that it really helps to have a fresh pedicure and a cute outfit whenever I'm shoe shopping. If I'm looking for a peep-toe pump or strappy sandal and I'm sporting yoga pants and crusty feet, it's harder for me to look and feel good. Believe me a little primping can go a long way!
Look for bargains: I usually find the best shoes in department stores rather than shoe boutiques. They normally carry larger selections and many times have sales that you wouldn't normally find in retail stores. Also, don't be afraid to wait a little for seasonal sales. Department stores normally have sales around national holidays or when a season is ending. So if you can afford to wait a little, go ahead! You'll save a ton in the end!
