Trim split ends yourself

Not every trim necessary requires a trip to the salon. You can cut your own split ends and save yourself a couple of visits. Make sure to first purchase a pair of professional hair scissors at your local beauty supply. If your hair is dry, spray some water over your hair and comb out until hair lays out flat. Then examine your ends by pulling hair forward or looking in the mirror. Then holding your scissors in a perpendicular angle, snip off around 1/4 inch of your ends.
Touch up your roots

Getting just your roots touched up can cost at least $60. Ouch! Save yourself some major cash by touching up your roots with an at-home root touch-up like Clairol Root Touch-Up Kit ($7). This will allow you to hold off on that hair appointment for at least another three weeks!
Do a professional blow out

Start off by prepping wet hair with a straightening spray like Frizz-Ease 3 Day Straight Semi-Permanent Styling Spray ($10). This will help block out frizz as you straighten, while protecting it from heat damage. Make sure to attach a nozzle to your blow dryer in order to concentrate the heat in a specific area. Blow dry sections of hair using a round bristle brush starting from your roots working your way down. For a smooth and shiny finish, applying a lightweight shine serum like L’Oréal EverPure Smooth Frizz-Free Serum ($9).
Do highlights at home

If you think you got what it takes to do your own highlights, make sure to start off by getting a highlighting cap. This will seal around the base and also comes with a rounded steel tool to help you pull out the strands you want to lighten through the pinholes.
Do an at-home Keratin treatment

Can’t afford the $200 Brazilian Keratin treatment? Then opt for an at-home one like Organix’s Brazilian Keratin Therapy 30 Day Smoothing Treatment ($15). This might not bring you the kind of results you’d get at a salon, but for less than $20 this easy- to- use treatment will smooth your tresses and cut down your blow drying time by 75 percent. What more could you ask for?
Do a DIY deep conditioning hair mask

Most salons charge around $10 or more for their hair conditioning masks. That’s not including the cost to wash and dry! So instead nourish your hair with an at-home avocado and olive oil hair mask that will leave your tresses soft and shiny. Crush one avocado in a bowl and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Mix well, then massage the mask throughout damp hair from roots to ends. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes and then rinse and style as usual.
Cut your own bangs

If you’re not feeling daring enough to give yourself some blunt bangs, at least consider trimming in between salon visits. Use a pair of straight sheers and make sure bangs are fully dry before cutting them. Separate your bangs from the rest of your hair and pull them down in front of your face, making sure they’re even. Then hold your scissors with the ends pointing up, perpendicular to the line of your bangs and just trim a little until you’re satisfied with the cut.
