I wish I was brave enough to bare all on the cover of a magazine, a-la pregnant Jessica Simpson or, even better, like Candice Huffine, one of the world's leading plus size models. I don't know that I could ever do that but, as I looked at Candice's gorgeous photo, I started thinking: Why is it that we so often see plus-size models naked on the cover of fashion magazines? Now, I'm all for appreciating these gorgeous women in all their curved glory but, at the end of the day, shouldn't they be looking stylish and fashionable on these covers instead?

It was pointed out by the blog Fashion Foie Gras, but I wholeheartedly agree. The only time I have really seen plus-size models these days is when they're nude or semi-nude and posing in provocative poses that show off all the right curves. That's all great and good. I love that we are (sometimes) embracing bigger women and how gorgeous they look, but doesn't it defeat the purpose if we're only lusting after their flesh?
Whenever I see any other fashion model, it's their gorgeous jewelry or elegant dress or to-die-for high heels that catch my attention. That's the point of the model, isn't it? To show off a piece of fashion and make it look so amazing that we all want it. So why are plus-size models showing off only themselves instead of clothes? By doing this we're not really embracing their body as much as we think that we are, we're setting them apart from the rest of the models out there. We're saying "oh, you're different because you're plus-sized" instead of saying "oh, you're beautiful and deserve to be wearing this gorgeous dress on the cover, too."

I'd really like to see this trend change and for us to truly start embracing plus-size models by featuring them gorgeously dressed instead of for the pure "SURPRISE!" factor of seeing a bigger woman actually looking good. They don't have to be treated special. Yes, they ARE special but they should really be treated like any other model—and shown on gorgeous covers just looking gorgeous, fully-clothed, in all of their curved glory.
