Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie and new Latino designer rule Fashion Star

Last night's premiere of Fashion Star was filled with more excitement than I could have imagined.__ NBC's new show was truly a spectacle and I was glued to the TV watching every minute of it. "Mentors" Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie and John Varvatos were great critiquing the contestants and I was happy to see that some got offers from buyers at Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue and H&M.

But the best part of the show was Oscar Fierro, a 37-year-old designer originally from El Salvador and currently living in Texas. Although he didn't completely wow the judges, I was really impressed by his story.

He left El Salvador at 15 and immersed himself in design as "the way to escape from the misery." His fashion is "full of colors and bright detail" to remind himself of happier times and, I have to say, I'm loving this new Latino designer.

During the show, 14 contestants sent 3 signature looks down the runway, the mentors offered critiques while buyers decided on what might be worthy enough to make it to the stores. Those that got an offer were safe while those that received none were up for elimination.

The unique thing about this show is that receiving an offer from one of the buyers means that this designer's outfit will actually be in stores the next day. A few of my favorites got offers, like the zip mini skirt at Saks Fifth Avenue, the sleeveless black & white halter dress at Macy's and the bright blue shift dress (with open lower back) at H&M.

Unfortunately, Oscar didn't receive any offers and was one of three contestants up for elimination at the end of the show.

The mentors were allowed to save one designer, though, and Nicole Richie told Oscar that he was the one they chose. He cried tears of joy and I breathed a sigh of relief. I can't wait to see what the 4'11" reputed "diva" comes up with next week. In true Latino style, he describes his collection as "an orgy of over the top things." That's my kind of guy. I'll be watching and, well, running off to the stores the minute one of his looks makes it.
