Cuban-American fashion designer Isabel Toledo is adding another title to her resume: book author. Known for her keen use of geometric shapes and patterns, the Latina is set to publish a memoir on style which should hit shelves next month.
Like most of the world, I first fell in love with Isabel's designs thanks to First Lady Michelle Obama. The modern day fashion icon wore one of Isabel's designs on the day of President Barack Obama's inauguration. She captured me with the beautiful lemongrass yellow wool lace shift dress with matching overcoat and I've been a fan of Isabel ever since.
Who doesn't remember that now iconic dress? Although that's not something I could ever afford, I started following Isabel's career and was thrilled when she released a line of shoes (my biggest fashion obsession) with Payless. That's one reason I can't wait to get my hands on her book.
In the memoir, titled Roots of Style: Weaving Together Life, Love and Fashion and coming out in hardcover on March 6th, Isabel will tackle her personal philosophies on design and life. She'll also discuss how she has managed to successfully blend design and commerce, without sacrificing either.
As someone who's got a secret desire to design clothes one day, I'm particularly interested in reading how she has grown as a designer throughout her life. As a fellow Latina, I love that she's putting life, love and fashion together in one mix. I am always striving for balance in my life and I'm excited to get some inspirations from the woman who's designed beautiful clothes for the First Lady.
