Jennifer Lopez drew from her single mom experience with 2 kids for role in ‘Unstoppable’

When most people think of Jennifer Lopez, “single mom” probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. She’s a millionaire celebrity with unlimited resources at her fingertips, after all. But technically, she has been a solo mom for most of the time since welcoming her two kids. And J.Lo recently shared that she drew from her single motherhood experience for her role in the new film Unstoppable.

As a refresher, Jen shares twins Max and Emme, 16, with her ex-husband, Marc Anthony. J.Lo and Marc were married from 2004 to 2014, meaning the kids were roughly 6 when they divorced. The exes’ custody agreement noted that Jennifer would have the children most of the time, with Marc taking them for one week each month.

Recently, J.Lo spoke about her new movie 'Unstoppable,' a biopic about Anthony Robles.

The film Unstoppable is a sports biopic that follows the story of Anthony Robles, a wrestler born without his right leg.

“With the unwavering love and support of his devoted mother Judy (Jennifer Lopez) and the encouragement of his coaches, Anthony fights through adversity to earn a spot on the Arizona State Wrestling team,” a Prime Video plot description reads. “But it will demand everything he has, physically and mentally, to achieve his ultimate quest to become an NCAA Champion.”

Unstoppable hits select theaters on December 6 and will be available for streaming on Prime Video on January 16, 2025.

Jennifer Lopez mentioned her experience as a single mom while talking about her character, Judy Robles.

During a December 2 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jennifer mentioned her experience as a solo parent.

“I’ve been a single mom at times in my life and [I’ve asked], ‘Am I enough for them?’” she told the outlet. “And the truth is, all you need is really one good parent to love you.”

Additionally, she pointed to Anthony Robles' success after being raised by a single mom.

“You hear it in Anthony [Robles’] voice, and look what he’s been able to accomplish,” Jennifer told Entertainment Weekly. (The wrestler ended his high school and college wrestling careers with impressive stats and accolades.) “That’s what the movie gave me: You are enough.”

The real Judy Robles praised J.Lo for her portrayal in 'Unstoppable.'

“She was able to really take on how I felt — the highs and the lows,” Anthony’s mom, Judy, told EW of Lopez. “We long to be loved, and we want something impossible to work out. And even when we see it and we’re like, ‘But I’ve got to keep pushing’ — there’s always a little bit of hope.”

Previously, Ben Affleck also lauded Jen's performance in 'Unstoppable.'

During a chat with Entertainment Tonight, Jennifer’s ex, Ben Affleck — who produced Unstoppable alongside Matt Damon through their company Artists Equity — lauded her performance.

“Jennifer’s spectacular,” Ben said of J.Lo in early November. “We believed in the right people, and I is another example of that.”

Jen has opened up about single motherhood in the past.

During a May 2023 interview with Audacity about her film Mother, J.Lo questioned the definition of a “perfect mom.”

“The truth is, we all do it differently. And we do it differently to different children in our family. … So there really is no perfect version; it’s just about being the best version of a mom you can be, with your specific set of skills, your specific set of experiences, and who you are as a person,” she explained.

Jennifer also mentioned being a solo parent, adding, “I love that idea, because I’m not a traditional mom. I’m not a stay-at-home mom. I’m a single mom, I’m a working mom. In a way, I’m kind of a famous mom, which is a weird thing for kids, too. So I have a whole set of things that is … what people think of as not normal. So I like that idea of bringing that to the table, like you don’t have to be a specific type of mom to be a great mom.”
