I'm always so amazed at how different some identical twins start looking after the years. In fact, I'm friends with a set of twins that looked exactly alike when they were little and could pass more for sisters than twins now that they're both 26. This is why I found these photographs by Beijing-based photographer Gao Rongguo fascinating. In each of his photos, he displays a set of identical twins over the age of 50, documenting the differences in appearance that have occurred over time. You have to see this even more dramsatic one to believe it!

So what was the motivation behind Rongguo's project? "People born at the same time, differ in the temperament and fate," he told the Huffington Post, quoting St. Augustine's Confessions. He believes that life experiences shape even the way people look physically. Rongguo took photos of various twins over the age of 50 in the Shandong Province in China where he grew up. He captured each set of twins looking at each other straight in the face. In each shot you can notice their resemblances along with their puzzling differences. It's pretty crazy how different some of them look!
"He/she used to have the same face, living in the same family, but their lives changed due to various reasons after growing up," Rongguo said. "I take these identical twins in their fifties face-to-face. This is a way similar to the way one would look in the mirror."
There's one set of twin brothers whose physical traits have changed so much they hardly look like siblings. It was so alarming! But the photo that resonated with me the most was definitely one of a twin staring into emptiness, signifying that his twin had passed. I'm telling you, this is physical proof that our lives and our environments really do have a strong effect on our appearance. That's the truth!
