Teen badly injured in Boston bombings voted prom queen in touching tribute (VIDEO)

Prom is a milestone for any high school student, but it held special meaning to 18-year-old Sydney Corcoran.

The teen was hit by shrapnel and badly wounded in the Boston Marathon bombings. After weeks spent in the hospital and physical therapy, spending the night with her friends at the dance marked a turning point in her recovery–especially since she was crowned Prom Queen by her peers!

Though the graduating senior was unable to dance (she's still on crutches), Corcoran says she was just happy to see everyone after spending more than a month away from school.  And she was especially thrilled that her mom, Celeste, was around to see her off.

Celeste lost both of her legs in the bombings. The two had attended the marathon to cheer on Corcoran's aunt. "This is a rite of passage. And I'm really glad she was able to go," Celeste said about her daughter's prom, adding that the teen "deserves to have fun tonight."

What an incredibly uplifting story. It's amazing that both Corcoran and her mom have been able to remain so strong on their long road to recovery and are determined not to let their injuries stop them from living their lives. They are so inspiring and I'm just glad that Corcoran's peers recognized her outstanding courage. Still, prom queen or not, Corcoran's strength proves she has a remarkable future ahead of her–and it all starts with her graduation, which is also coming up next week!
