Mom dies in car wreck as she rushes to hospital to deliver her first baby

I'll never forget my husband driving me to the hospital in the middle of the night so I could deliver our first baby. I was nervous and excited at the same time, and even though we lived far from the downtown hospital we'd chosen, I knew we had plenty of time to get there. But that doesn't seem to have been the case with Megan Riggans, a 22-year-old woman whose car, driven by her husband, hydroplaned, went off the side of the road and slammed into a tree Sunday night.

The newlywed was in labor and she and her husband Brian were rushing to UNC Chapel Hill Hospital so she could give birth to their first child, a baby boy. Severe thunderstorms had dropped heavy rain that evening.

Riggans wasn't wearing a seatbelt when firefighters arrived at the scene of the accident and found her unconscious. She was rushed to the nearest hospital where doctors delivered her son who was still breathing and had a pulse before his mom was pronounced dead.

My heart broke when I found out about this story for so many reasons. First of all, Riggans was only 22 yeas old and she had just married Brian, her same age, four months ago. She was a soon-to-be first time mom whose dreams of holding her baby for the first time ever were crashed just a little while before meeting him. Now a baby boy is motherless and a brand new dad is widowed.

I hope the young father finds the strength he's going to need to look after his newborn son, whose condition was not known as of Tuesday. His mother-in-law, who was at the hospital waiting for the impending birth of her grandson when she found out her daughter had died in the car accident, thinks he "is not ready for all this." ¡Pobrecito!

Do you think this first-time dad will be able to cope with this horrific turn of events. Share your thoughts with us by leaving us a comment below.
