Last week, she posted a mirror selfie and shared that although it was early in the pregnancy, after an ultrasound she learned that this pregnancy was not going the same way her other pregnancies did. She received so much love from other moms and women who have had similar experiences, and she believes it is important for women not to suffer in silence or keep miscarriages a secret so that the stigma around miscarriage can be removed altogether.
She opened up about the moment she knew this pregnancy was different.
Hilaria opened up on Today about the ultrasound that made her aware something wasn't right with this pregnancy and why she chose to share it with the public instead of keeping silent. During the ultrasound, she noticed silence at first from the technician, who then said the baby's heart wasn't beating "very fast." Hilaria shared that she was scheduled to have another scan following the interview.
"I think I'm going to have the answer one way or the other. I'm pretty sure that this is not going to stick. When we agree to be parents, we have to accept the good and the bad," the yoga instructor said. "We have to open our hearts and realize that there's going to be hard moments, too."
Hilaria first opened up about her fears regarding her pregnancy on Instagram.
She said she felt it was important to be transparent with her fans during this pregnancy, even if it meant having to deal with the possible loss in front of the world.
"I want to share with you that I am most likely experiencing a miscarriage. I always promised myself that if I were to get pregnant again, I would share the news with you guys pretty early, even if that means suffering a public loss. I have always been so open with you all about my family, fitness, pregnancies…and I don’t want to keep this from you, just because it isn’t as positive and shiny as the rest," she shared on Thursday, April 4. "I think it’s important to show the truth…because my job is to help people by being real and open. Furthermore, I have no shame or embarrassment with this experience. I want to be a part of the effort to normalize miscarriage and remove the stigma from it. There is so much secrecy during the first trimester. This works for some, but I personally find it to be exhausting. I’m nauseous, tired, my body is changing. And I have to pretend that everything is just fine–and it truly isn’t. I don’t want to have to pretend anymore. I hope you understand."
She usually shares a lot of her motherhood moments on social media.
This was no exception. In her post, she continued to explain what exactly was going on with her fifth pregnancy: "So, this is what is going on now: the embryo has a heartbeat, but it isn’t strong, and the baby isn’t growing very much. So we wait–and this is hard. So much uncertainty…but the chances are very, very small that this is a viable pregnancy. I have complete confidence that my family and I will get through this, even if the journey is difficult. I am so blessed with my amazing doctor, my dear friends, and my loving family…My husband and my four very healthy babies help me keep it together and have the perspective of how truly beautiful life is, even when it occasionally seems ugly. The luck and gratitude I feel that I am my babies’ mommy, is wonderfully overwhelming and comforting. In your comments, please be kind. I’m feeling a bit fragile and I need support. I’m hoping, that by sharing this, I can contribute to raising awareness about this sensitive topic."
She then received an outpouring of support, with women sharing in the comments section similar stories they have lived through.
Hilaria reacted to all the love and support she received from other people after sharing the news.
"Thank you for your support and thank you for your stories. I want to assure you that I know I will be ok. I have perspective to understand sadness and loss in the grand scheme of things. Emotionally I am processing it all…being able to be open with you has been extremely healing. I was very nervous to share, and am so relieved that it was received with such love," she captioned a pic of herself with her babies on Friday, April 5. "I am grateful that you listened and I’m grateful that I have these tiny partners to go through this with. I don’t know what I would do without my community. Thank you for making my world a brighter place and for your sharing. I know that you didn’t have to and am humbled and honored by your openness. I don’t know about you, but I find it extremely comforting to know that I am not alone on this difficult journey ❤️ #neveralone."
Her husband also showed support for her after her post on Instagram.
"My wife is kind and generous in her support of other women," the actor captioned the post he reshared from her page. The couple have four other children together, including daughter Carmen, who was born in August 2013, and their sons Rafael, born in June 2015; Leonardo Ángel Charles, born in September 2016; and their youngest, Romeo Alejandro David, who was born in May 2018. The actor is also dad to an older daughter, Ireland Baldwin, whom he welcomed with Kim Basinger in 1995.
