Why Kim Kardashian denying she has cellulite is harmful to women

When paparazzi decided to snap pictures of Kim Kardashian back in April vacationing in Mexico, the world suddenly thought it was okay to cruelly criticize her cellulite. The comments were mean and unwarranted. Twitter trolls practically shut down the internet with their hate and effed-up memes and even Piers Morgan had something to say about it, claiming that "flaws should not be celebrated." But I defended Kim because I love her cellulite and what it means to the rest of us women, and she should too. But she's denying that she even has them.

I was proud when those pics of Kim chilling on a Mexican beach were released. There she was rocking a thonged bikini bottom, cellulite and all. The woman appeared happy, confident and completely unbothered by what anyone had to say about her bare and dimpled butt. In fact, weeks went by and she not once addressed the cruel chismes. She still hit up the beach in her teeny tiny bikini and was pretty unapologetic about it.

Months later, Kim is now saying that the images were altered to make her appear like she has even more cellulite than she actually has. Um, what?

"I saw these awful photos of myself when I was on a trip to Mexico and people were Photoshopping them and sharpening them, and they're the worst photos," Kim said in a recent appearance on The View. "I definitely was not in my best shape. I hadn't worked out in about twelve weeks, I'd had two surgeries on my uterus. We documented that on the show. But I was already not feeling like myself. And then when people where sharpening them and making them look way worse, and then those were going around, I was like 'Okay, I'm going to get it together' and I started working out with this bodybuilder girl."

Listen, I can understand why Kim would be so hard on herself and her body after those pics came out. The comments were effed-up to say the least. But here's the thing, I have a VERY hard time believing those pictures were Photoshopped or "sharpened." That cellulite looked real and Kim admitted herself that she hadn't worked out in weeks and picked up some weight. A big butt many times comes with unwanted dimples but the thing is, that's okay.

It's very typical of Kim to try to deny a flaw that she has spent the majority of her career covering with tanners, filters, and Photoshop. She covers them because if we don't see them, in her mind, they are no longer real. But cellulite is real. Her cellulite is real and most of us have it. That's what makes us all real women. So to deny something that most women have, is actually a disservice to all of us. It perpetuates the message that cellulite is a flaw that we should cover and be ashamed of. We are saying that women with cellulite are not beautiful enough and that is a lie.

If Kim wants to hit up the gym harder or do whatever laser treatments she feels she needs to do to reduce the appearance of her cellulite, it's all good. But don't deny a very normal feature and put it out to look like a flaw. Don't try to make the rest of us feel like we're not good enough because we're not sporting dimple-free, airbrushed bods. Cellulite is not something that needs to be fixed. The only thing that needs to change is our very flawed attitude towards women's bodies.

Drops Mic.
