3 Apps that can make learning about money fun

These days, many kids are tech-savvy – almost as much as their parents! Why not use some apps that can teach them real money-management skills in a fun, interactive way? Here are three you might want to try:

  • Savings Spree encourages children ages 7 and up to make wise choices about saving, spending, donating, or investing their money. They learn how their choices impact their short and long-term financial goals. The game is divided into rounds that can be played individually or in game-show format.*
The details:* Apple devices only; $5.99 to download. It is also the winner of the Parent's Choice Gold Award and the Editor's Choice Award from Children's Technology Review.

  • Renegade Buggies is an engaging race game that teaches kids how to shop smart and save money, which they can then "invest" in fun improvements to their supercharged buggy. Obstacles throughout the course make the game even more challenging – and of course, provide even more learning opportunities about spending and saving money.
The details: Free to download for Apple and Android.

  • Green$treets is a game for kids 5 and up with characters that represent universal financial behaviors. It teaches financial lessons and ecological responsibility, too. Kids rescue endangered animals, but players must first create a budget to buy food, shelter, and toys to make the animals happy before they can be released back to their natural habitats. Kids learn to earn money through fun games, save money to reach their goal, and spend their money wisely while also donating a portion of their earnings to charity.*
