5 Signs you are Latino on the 4th of July

Happy 4th of July, my friends! How do you plan on celebrating? Part of what I love so much about this big beautiful country of ours is that we are so diverse and that means we will celebrate the same holiday in many different ways. I was born here, so I've always had a reason to celebrate the 4th of July, but most of my relatives growing up were not born here. Does that mean they didn't celebrate? Of course not! When in the U.S., celebrate like the gringos, but with your own Latino spin.

Here are five signs that you are Latino on the 4th of July:

1. You will be firing up the grill, but you won't be grilling hamburgesas or hot dogs. No way, not when you can make carne asada and elote.

2. The chamacos at your celebration get to have a piñata and fireworks. Por qué no, it's the country's birthday after all?!

3. Brand new citizens will be beaming with pride. There is nothing like the joy and pride of a naturalized citizen. Immigrants from other countries worked hard to become American citizens and it's truly a beautiful thing.

4. You're not sure if that was the sound of firecrackers or a gun being shot in the air. It's not only Latinos that think shooting guns in the air on the 4th of July is acceptable, but it happens.

5. There is more than one flag on display at your celebration. Sure the Stars and Stripes will be waving, but nobody said that you couldn't invite banderas from other países.
