Woman lived off insects & mice for a week, says she loved it

With all the sketchy news we hear about the way our food is handled, it's no surprise that Americans have become more cautious about what they eat. Candra Kolodziej decided to take a new approach to her diet which included eliminating store-bought meat and replacing it with another form of protein.

This nutty lady decided to eat live food she could easily purchase at a pet shop which included crickets, mealworms, and even MICE!

The 32-year-old woman from Traverse City Michigan is concerned about  the harm the factory farming industry is causing on our environment which is why she decided to boycott storebought meat altogether.

That's when she turned to live food sold at her local pet store for which she replaced one meal everyday for a week. She depicts her journey through Vice.com and even shares some personal recipes that she whipped up during her experiment.

She made sure to get dietary advice from her doctor whose only warning was to not eat mice intestines. With that, Kolodziej purchased crickets, mice, minnows, and other items that your pets would eat. To the average person this might appear gross, but she somehow prepared them to be edibly appealing. From Cricket Pad Thai to Mice Pie, Kolodziej found a way to revamp classic recipes to creating her own.

The one that captured my attention the most was the chocolate covered crickets, which is most likely the ONLY dish I would try from her menu. In the end, she says that living off these nutritious foods wasn't as bad as one would think and it even helped her drop a few pounds in the process. She suggests that everyone give eating these live foods a chance since they are probably better for you than the meats we are exposed to.

Being a vegetarian doesn't seem so bad after seeing some of the images of the foods Kolodziej ate on her meal plan. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure if I was stranded in nature somewhere these would be the exact foods I would go for, but on a regular basis? No way. As I mentioned before, the crickets are PROBABLY the only ones I would try out, but images of that Mice Pie left me traumatized. While I understand her purpose for trying this new way of eating and support her fight, I doubt it's going to catch on anytime soon. I do think that if you are invited to her home though, that you double check whats in her meals. I don't think anyone will like the idea of plucking mice whiskers out of their teeth…
