Remember how swollen Kim Kardashian's feet got during pregnancy? The poor girl got a lot of crap for it, but the truth is swelling is a common–and normal!–pregnancy symptom, not something any pregnant woman should be scrutinized or criticized for. It can get especially uncomfortable with the summertime heat (that'll be here before you know it). So is swelling something you can treat or even prevent?

During pregnancy women tend to consume and retain more fluids, which is absolutely normal by the way. But the circulating fluids and dilated blood vessels can many times lead to edema (swelling). Here are a few ways to deal and prevent pregnancy swelling from getting out of control!
1. Wear compression stockings: Our Assistant Managing Editor swears by Preggers Light Support Maternity Pantyhose ($23). They don't just help prevent swelling, but they're also made with breathable materials that help provide shaping support. You have to try them!
2. Cut down on your salt intake: Swelling can be reduced by cutting down on your sodium (salt) intake and avoiding pre-packaged or highly processed foods that tend to have high levels of salt and other preservatives.
3. Put your feet up: Believe it or not, simply crossing your legs can restrict blood flow therefore increasing swelling. Try to avoid crossing your legs and keep legs and feet elevated as often as possible. Also try to move around a lot and avoid standing for long periods of time.
4. Drink a lot of water: Reducing your water intake isn't going to help stop swelling. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Try having at least six to eight glasses of water a day to keep your kidneys functioning properly.
5. Try dandelion tea: Herbal teas, like dandelion tea, can help prevent fluid retention but you might want to consult with your doctor first especially if you have a history of gallbladder problems.
6. Move around: If you can't exercise, try to at least make time for walking. Keeping yourself physical can help prevent pregnancy issues like swelling because it redistributes retained fluids.
