Instead you can opt to buy them from the frozen food aisle at your supermarket or you can bank on all the amazing winter super foods out there.

Shopping for affordable produce in the winter time can be a bit of a hassle since prices go up for many items. The key is to find out which are in season and you'll see that it is possible to eat healthy and affordably during the colder months.
For example, now is the time to indulge in all your favorite different squashes. With the many recipes out there for them, it's impossible to get bored of this veggies. There are also many vitamin C boosting foods such as citrus fruits, which prevent you from getting sick during this time.

Beans: These legumes whether they are lentils, chick peas, or kidney beans are packed with fiber, magnesium, iron, and folate. They can be used in salads, soups, or as sides for your meals and due to their fiber content will keep you full and prevent winter weight-gain.
Squash: There are a variety of these types available during this time such as spaghetti, butternut, winter, acorn squash–you name it. Each of these provides your daily dose of beta-carotene and can be prepared in different ways that will keep you full and satisfy you.
Sweet potato: This delicious winter food can be baked, mashed, even added to pancake mixes and salads. They are loaded with vitamin A, beta-carotene, and lots of fiber.
Root vegetables: Think beets, carrots, parsnips, turnips, which are great additions to any of your hot or cold dishes.
Citrus fruits: Add oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and limes to your supermarket cart to keep your vitamin C levels up during the winter time. Get creative by adding them to your water, salads, even on their own.
Avocado: For the longest time I thought avocado was a summer fruit, but luckily it is also a winter food. Load up on your healthy fats by adding it to smoothies, salads, or even to your side dishes.
