The 76th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards aired live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, on Sunday September 15. I, as usual, watched to cry over the acceptance speeches and to opine on the fashion choices made by stars in attendance. The red carpet looks for the 2024 Emmys definitely left me with some opinions, which you know I’ll be sharing.
More from MamásLatinas: The most revealing red carpet looks of all time
But before I get into what I thought were the best and the most debatable looks on the red carpet, I feel the need to remind us all that it’s just fashion. My taste may not be the same as yours and that’s great because what a boring world it would be if we all had the same fashion sense. Having made that clear, let’s get on with my breakdown of red carpet looks.
BEST: Selena Gomez in Ralph Lauren Collection.

Selena Gomez, who was nominated in the outstanding lead actress in a comedy series category, looked like a billion bucks. Her lush velvet gown was elegant and fit her beautifully. The bejeweled detailing around the neckline framed the newly minted billionaire's face to perfection.
BEST: Nava Mau in Gigi Goode.

The Mexican-born actress was nominated for her work on the British dark comedy series Baby Reindeer in the category of outstanding supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie. The dress she chose for the event looked like it was made just for her. It was sculptural, form-fitting, and shone brightly under the lights.
BEST: Quinta Brunson in Georges Chakra Couture.

Quinta Brunson of Abbott Elementary was nominated in two categories: outstanding lead actress in a comedy series and outstanding writing for a comedy series. She also wore an outstanding dress that was so remarkable, it needed very little accessorizing.
BEST: Laura Dern in Gabriela Hearst.

Black dresses get a bad rap sometimes because they are considered safe and somewhat boring. However, there is nothing boring about the black gown that Laura Dern wore to the Emmys. It's striking and best of all, has pockets!
BEST: Gael García Bernal in an unusual black suit.

Gael rocked a full beard and a rather interesting suit. The black suit had a kind of brooch-style clip that closed the jacket and the pants featured wide flowy legs. Very stylish, indeed.
BEST: Diego Luna in Brunello Cucinelli.

Full disclosure: There is nothing truly remarkable about what Diego wore to the Emmys, I just enjoy seeing him make appearances. He looks nice in his suit and I'm glad he was there and opted to speak in Spanish when he presented.
BEST: Anna Sawai in Vera Wang.

Anna Sawai, who won in the outstanding lead actress in a drama series, looked winning in a strapless red Vera Want gown. She kept her accessories simple and pulled her hair back in a low bun.
BEST: Liza Colón-Zayas in Christian Siriano.

The Puerto Rican actress will go down in history as the first Latina to win an Emmy in the outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series. She accepted the award in a shimmering green gown that made her look like a jewel.
BEST: Jonathan Bailey in Giorgio Armani.

Jonathan Bailey was nominated in the outstanding supporting actor in a limited or anthology series or movie. He did not take home the award, but all eyes were on him in his dapper suit. Is it me or is it giving modified zoot suit vibes? I love it!
BEST: Gina Torres in vibrant pink.

Gina Torres was part of a segment that paid tribute to TV lawyers. She played Jessica Pearson on the show Suits. She opted not to wear a suit for her appearance at the Emmys, though. Instead she wore a bright pink one-shoulder gown that showed off one of her toned arms.
BEST: Ayo Edebiri in Bottega Veneta.

Ayo was nominated in the outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for her portrayal of Sydney on The Bear. I will never understand why that show is considered a comedy, I love it, but it's not a comedy. Anyway, what I do understand is how lovely Ayo looked in the speckled red, black, and white gown she wore to the Emmys ceremony.
BEST: Nicola Coughlan in Prabal Gurung.

Dearest gentle reader,
It is becoming eminently clear that Nicola Coughlan is not only wonderful in her role as Penelope Bridgerton, but a wonder to behold on any red carpet. Her style is mesmerizing and I, for one, cannot take my eyes off of her, nor do I want to.
BEST: Sofía Vergara in Dolce & Gabbana.

Sofía Vergara was nominated in the outstanding lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie category for her titular role in Griselda. As transformative as she was in that series, she showed up to the awards ceremony in a classic Sofía look. On red carpets, she favors form-fitting gowns that are elegant.
BEST: Jennifer Anniston in Oscar de la Renta.

Jennifer Aniston is kind of like Sofía Vergara in that they both stick to tried and true styles on the red carpet. You don't look to them for cutting-edge fashion choices and that's OK. They aren't about trends.
DEBATABLE: Dan Levy in Loewe.

I absolutely adore this ensemble. I think it's fun and whimsical, which is the vibe that Dan gives off himself. A lot of people don't seem to see the vision, though and bashed the way the shirt looks. Whatever. Dan, who cohosted the show with his dad Eugene Levy, changed into a more traditional collared look for his hosting duties.
DEBATABLE: Eiza González in Tamara Ralph Couture.

The Mexican actress wore pink ensemble has people divided. A quick glance around the internet has her in both best and worst dressed categories. Personally, I like what she wore. It's fun and frothy.
DEBATABLE: Meryl Streep in Alexander McQueen.

OK, I might be the only one debating this look, but I think that's because there is an unwritten rule that no one is allowed to say anything bad about Meryl Streep. I get it, she is a national treasure. Please let it be known, that I am not saying anything bad about her. What I am saying is that I am not convinced that this suit is spectacular. I love Meryl, I love pink, I just don't love this look. I would get rid of the pussybow blouse and button up the blazer. There's too much going on without any contrast. Don't hate me for speaking my truth.
DEBATABLE: Tyler James Williams in Dolce & Gabbana.

I look forward to seeing Tyler James of Abbott Elementary on red carpets because his sense of style is spectacular. He always takes risks and surprises me. The only reason I call his look "debatable" is because it's not your standard menswear look. I think it's wonderful, but I have no doubt that when shown to many, it will have them up in arms. Speaking of arms…WOW!
DEBATABLE: Ricky Martin and John Leguizamo in white jackets.

Both Ricky and John looked very nice, but for some reason I really don't like the whole white jacket and black pants combo at awards shows. They look like uniforms to me and I'm not a fan.
DEBATABLE: Maya Erksine covered in flowers.

OK, so when I first saw a picture of Maya in this dress, I wondered why she picked it. But then I saw her moving in it and I thought, "Oh, this is one of those dresses that looks better in person than it does in photographs."
