When Kate Middleton married Prince William in 2011, she became an important member of the British royal family. The Princess of Wales has since produced three heirs to the throne and embarked on countless trips and public appearances. Recently, however, royal fans have been worried about her health following major surgery.

In addition to being married to the Prince of Wales, who is next in line to the British throne (which means she's the future queen consort), Kate is mother to the next three in the line of succession after William. Prince George was born in 2013, Princess Charlotte arrived in 2015, and Prince Louis came in 2018. So it makes sense that fans of the royal family were worried about Kate’s health when it was announced that she underwent surgery in January.
Kensington Palace announced Kate Middleton underwent a ‘planned abdominal surgery.’
On January 17, Kensington Palace released a public statement announcing the Princess of Wales had “planned abdominal surgery” the day prior. "The surgery was successful, and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for 10 to 14 days, before returning home to continue her recovery," the statement read. "Based on the current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter."
Why did Kate need surgery?

Kensington Palace did not disclose the reason for Kate’s surgery. The exact surgery that was performed has not been revealed, either. However, the palace did clarify it is noncancerous, per People.
Kate opted to keep the details of her medical information private.

"The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private," the January 17 statement read. "Kensington Palace will, therefore, only provide updates on Her Royal Highness’ progress when there is significant new information to share."
Kate is now recovering at home.
On January 29, Kate was discharged from the hospital and is currently recovering from surgery with her family at her home in Windsor. “She is making good progress," a statement from Kensington Palace read. “The Prince and Princess wish to say a huge thank you to the entire team at The London Clinic, especially the dedicated nursing staff, for the care they have provided.”
King Charles III also had surgery in January.

On January 17—the same day that Kate’s surgery was announced—Buckingham palace revealed in a statement that her father-in-law, King Charles III, also needed surgery. “In common with thousands of men each year, The King has sought treatment for an enlarged prostate," Buckingham Palace announced. "His Majesty's condition is benign, and he will attend hospital next week for a corrective procedure."
King Charles was released from the hospital on the same day as Kate.

"The King was this afternoon discharged from hospital following planned medical treatment and has rescheduled forthcoming public engagements to allow for a period of private recuperation," Buckingham Palace said in a statement released on January 29. "He would like to thank the medical team and all those involved in supporting his hospital visit, and is grateful for all the kind messages he has received in recent days.”
Hopefully, recovery goes smoothly for both King Charles and Kate Middleton. We wish them both the best.
