VMAs 2021 red carpet: The best and worst looks

The MTV Video Music Awards are an institution in the music world, and celebrities and fans alike look forward to tuning into the ceremony every year. Being a more laid-back and casual affair than many other major award ceremonies, like the Grammys, celebs get to be really creative with their VMAs fashion choices, which makes it a lot of fun to watch them arrive on the red carpet.

More from MamásLatinas: The best looks from the 2021 Oscars red carpet

We love seeing celebs like Jennifer Lopez up the ante with their VMAs looks. Sometimes, they come up with incredible red carpet outfits that will go down in fashion history, and other times, they fall flat, but either way, the VMAs are an opportunity for celebrities to take some fashion risks and we love to see it. So, we've pored over the photos from the 2021 VMAs red carpet and are sharing some of the best—and the worst—looks from the highly anticipated awards show.

Best: Olivia Rodrigo

Pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo, who is Filipina American, looked like the belle of the ball in this bright, youthful, draped gown. The "Good 4 U" singer also took home the coveted Best New Artist award at her first VMAs.

Best: Jennifer Lopez

It's rare for J.Lo to ever make a fashion misstep, so it's no surprise that she stunned at the 2021 VMAs. She donned a lace-up, two-piece black outfit embellished with tiny, petal-shaped mirrors, showing off every bit of her ultra-fit body.

Best: Leslie Grace

In the Heights actor Leslie Grace looked like a glittery, glowing goddess at the VMAs. This tinsel-like mini-dress flattered her figure beautifully, and we love the corseted lining. It gave a little edge to the feminine look.

Best: Camila Cabello

We wouldn't have expected to like Camila Cabello's VMAs gown so much because the big bow shape across her hips is like, a lot, but she pulled it off beautifully. It's all about the confidence, plus it totally went with the vibe she's had going on lately as she promoted her upcoming album, Familia.

Best: Ciara

Singer Ciara, who is besties with Vanessa Bryant, looked absolutely gorgeous in this all-over black lace gown by Tom Ford. She has an incredible body, and it showed off all her best assets without revealing too much.

Best: Megan Fox

Listen, we still think Kim Kardashian did the naked Mugler dress better at the Met Gala a few years ago, but there's not denying actor Megan Fox looked incredible at the 2021 VMAs. That dress is a stunner, we love the illusion crystal details.

Best: Billy Porter

Cinderella star Billy Porter looked awesome on the VMAs red carpet. We love his monochromatic metallic suit and platform boots, and the makeup and accessories are spot-on. It's modern and edgy, and perfect for the VMAs.

Best: Ed Sheeran

English singing sensation Ed Sheeran kind of surprised us with his VMAs look, but he honestly looks great. The "Bad Habits" singer wore a gold and black Versace blazer in a classic print for the design house and carried it off really well.

Best: Saweetie

Rapper Saweetie went with a really elegant look for the VMAs this year, and looked absolutely gorgeous on the red carpet. From her platinum blond hair to her leg wrap stilettos, the styling is spot on.

Best: Anitta

Brazilian singer Anitta made a departure from her usual colorful, tropical-inspired style, and went with on Old Hollywood glam look for the VMAs, and looked fantastic. We loved that she modernized the look with the jewel-encrusted bodice cups. Total mermaid vibes.

Worst: Lil Nas X

We are totally here for Lil Nas X and his willingness to always take fashion risks, and although he made several VMAs best-dressed lists with this lilac-hued 'fit, we just aren't feeling it. Honestly, he looked like he was trying to emulate Lil Kim's iconic 1999 VMAs style, but didn't do it as well. If he would have just lost the sleeves, and did something different with his hair, he might have been on our best-dressed list, but he's kind of giving us more church lady vibes than we'd like.

Worst: Avril Lavigne

We honestly do not like this one at all. Avril Lavigne stayed very close to her pop punk roots with this hot pink plaid suit, but we really wish that after all these years she would have gone with something a bit more sophisticated.

Worst: Shawn Mendes

We really like Camila Cabello's man Shawn Mendes. He's a total cutie with a great voice, but we are not here for this VMAs look. He looks like he's trying to invoke an old school Cuban vibe, but he just doesn't pull it off.

Worst: Kacey Musgraves

Nope. Kacey Musgraves purple and red VMAs look is not a winner. It looks like she had a lot of fun wearing this getup, but like, if you wanna make a fashion statement, make a fashion statement, don't just throw on a bright, feathery hat and call it a day. This looks like something my 5-year-old would put on playing dress-up.

Worst: Nick Cannon

There honestly aren't too many words for this one. Let's just call it "trying too hard." We know he's a comedian, and we're not sure if that's what he meant for this look, but it's just bad, regardless of intention.

Worst: Ashanti

Ashanti is always gonna be Ashanti and step out in racy outfits at every chance she gets, but we wish the singer would have worn something a little bit more innovative. We could totally see her wearing the exact same thing back when she was popular in the early oughties.

Worst: Doja Cat

Doja Cat's VMAs red carpet dress was actually cute, but the styling ruined the entire outfit. It was just too much. The jewelry and boots are all wrong and totally distract from the dress. We would have liked it a lot better with a pair of strappy black heels and her hair pulled back so you could see her face, because the makeup is hot.

Worst: Tinashe

Again, this is another recycled look. We've seen celebrities like Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and even Beyoncé wear outfits like this 20 years ago. Tinashe could have done better. Her makeup is gorgeous though.

Worst: Kim Petras

German singer Kim Petras showed up to the VMAs in typical VMAs worst dressed garb. She was clearly trying to make some sort of artistic statement, but it just looks bad. She wrote on Instagram: "To my high school teachers who kicked me out of class for wearing latex dresses to school cause I wanted to look like the fashion shows I was watching religiously…. hope u talk [expletive] when u see this."

Worst: Bella Poarch

This. Is. Too. Much. Singer Bella Poarch's lacy, bell bottoms and overcoat ensemble is overkill. It would totally work for like, a Halloween costume, but the look doesn't translate well on the red carpet at all.
