We love to find inspiration for baby names from just about anywhere, and the Tokyo Olympics seemed like the perfect event to look for great name options. Alexa: Inspired by Mexican gymnast Alexa Moreno.
Her full name is Alexa Citlali Moreno Medina. We mention it because Citlali would also be a great baby name to consider. Alexa is an artistic gymnast. In 2018 she won a bronze medal at the world championships, making her the first Mexican female to medal in the world championships.
Anriquelis: Inspired by Venezuelan jodoka Anriquelis Barrios.
Anriquelis Barrios won a gold medal in the women's 63 kg event at the Central American and Caribbean Games. She also won a silver medal at the Pan American Games and the Pan American Judo Championships. Her name is gorgeous and uncommon.
Arlen: Inspired by Cuban boxer Arlen López
In 2016, Arlen López won the gold medal in the men's middleweight event at the Summer Olympics. The name Arlen means: "pledge" or "oath." It's also a variation of the name Arlin.
Brisa: Inspired by Costa Rican surfer Brisa Hennessy.
Brisa was raised in Costa Rica by parents who just happened to be surf instructors, so she has been surfing since she was very young. She's also well-traveled and been able to visit and surf in places like Fiji and Hawaii. Her name means "breeze or small wind," which is a perfect name for a surfer.
Bryan: Inspired by El Salvadoran surfer Bryan Perez.
When he was a kid, Bryan and his brother used to watch people's cars at Punta Roca, El Salvador while they surfed. Then one day, he got in the water and started surfing himself. Although, Brian is not an uncommon name, it feels special when it's spelled with a y, as Bryan.
Cergia: Inspired by Honduran judoka Cergia David Güity.
Cergia is the tenth Honduran judoka to represent Honduras in the Olympics. She had to do some of her training virtually because of the global health crisis, but still managed to qualify. Cergia is not in any baby name database that we could find, which means not too many people have that name.
Emiliano: Inspired by Uruguayan long jumper Emiliano Lasa.
Emiliano Lasa is a two-time South American champion and a two-time Pan American medalist. The name Emiliano is derived from the Roman family name Aemilius. It can either mean "eager" or "rival."
Esmeralda: Inspired by Mexican boxer Esmeralda Falcón.
Esmeralda Falcón is making history by being the first Mexican female boxer to compete at the Olympics. Good for her! The name Esmeralda is inspired by the jewel of the same name. It's a precious name.
Francisca: Inspired by Chilean skeet shooter Francisca Crovetto.
Francisca Crovetto represented Chile at both the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. The name Francisca can mean either "from France" or "truthful."
Iván: Inspired by the Colombian runner Iván Darío González.
Iván Darío González is a middle and long distance runner who won a gold medal in the 10,000 meters at the 2018 South American Games. Iván is a name of Russian origin that means "God is gracious."
Julimar: Inspired by Honduran swimmer Julimar Ávila.
Julimar is a recent graduate of Boston University where she swam with the Division I swimming program and majored in human physiology. The name Julimar means "artist, careful, influencer" and isn't a name you come across very often.
Leodan: Inspired by Peruvian boxer Leodan Pezo.
Leodan Pezo won a bronze medal in the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima. He qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in the light category for boxing. Leodan is a lovely name that isn't a particularly common.
Leticia: Inspired by Brazilian skateboarder Leticia Bufoni.
Leticia Bufoni is making history by being one of the first women to be competing in skateboarding, which is one of the five new sports debuting at the Tokyo Olympics. The name Leticia is of Latin origin and means "gladness, happiness."
Luz: Inspired by Colombian judoka Luz Adiela Álvarez.
Luz Adiela Álvarez is a part of the Colombian national judo squad in the extra-lightweight category and has won medals from continental games and championships. The name Luz means "light" and can also reference the Virgin Mary who is known as "Nuestra Señora de la Luz."
Mirna: Inspired by Guatemalan athlete Mirna Sucely Ortiz.
Mirna Sucely Ortiz is a racewalker. Racewalking is definitely faster than walking and closer to running, but what differentiates it from running is that one foot must be on the ground at all times. Mirna means "tender, beloved."
Moisés: Inspired by Dominican Republic taekwondo team member Moisés Hernández.
Moisés Hernández represented the Dominican Republic in 2016 at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in taekwondo. He will be doing the same for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Moisés means "drawn out, drawn out of the water."
Neisi: Inspired by Ecuadoran weightlifter Neisi Dajomes.
Neisi is a three-time Pan American champion. She competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in the women's 69 kg event and came in seventh place. The name Neisi is beautiful and uncommon.
Santiago: Inspired by Colombian weightlifter Brayan Santiago Rodallegas.
At the 2019 Pan American Weightlifting Championships in the 81 kg category, Brayan Santiago Rodallegas won gold medals and set Pan American records in each lift. The name Santiago means "of St. James."
Yaime: Inspired by Cuban athlete Yaime Pérez Tellez.
Yaime Pérez Tellez is known for her phenomenal athleticism and discus throwing abilities. She won the gold medal at the 2010 World Junior Championships in Athletics. You won't find the name Yaime on most baby name lists, which makes it appealing to anyone who would like an uncommon name for their child.
