Detangling curls could be tricky and because it's drier than straight or wavy textures, it's more prone to breakage and frizz. But there's a few ways you can comb through those knots without disturbing your curl pattern. Check them out!
Detangle in the shower: The best time to detangle your hair is when you're still in the shower and your hair is still soaked. I find that less hair breaks off this way. Plus, it's easier to clean up those pelitos from the tub than my bathroom floor.
Use a conditioner: You want to make sure that your hair is as moisturized as possible before running a comb through it. Try applying an ultra-rich conditioner that's going to not only nourish your curls, but make it easier to detangle. I love Mixed Chicks Detangling Deep Conditioner ($11).
Separate hair into sections: After thoroughly applying conditioner, separate hair into two sections, straight down the middle. Start by detangling at the ends and slowly work your way up to the roots.
Use a wide tooth comb: To prevent breakage, make sure to ONLY detangle using a wide-tooth comb. It's a lot gentler on curls. A regular hair brush won't just break off hairs, but will trigger some serious frizz too.
Apply leave-In: After you've detangled your hair, rinse the conditioner out with cool or lukewarm water and then apply a leave-in treatment immediately after to help lock in moisture. Try Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Leave-In Conditioner ($14) and then style as usual.
