5 Things to consider before cutting your hair

I'm absolutely OBSESSED with Jessica Alba's new shoulder-length haircut. Like totally head-over-heels obsessed with it. She debuted the new asymmetrical style last night at the Hollywood Stands Up To Cancer event looking fiercer than ever. This cut might be uneven, but it literally looks good from every single angle. Believe me–Jessica has the pics on Instagram to prove it! And as much as I love my long locks, this fresh chop is really making me contemplate a trip to my stylist, like ASAP!

Celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkins was the genius behind the chic cut. It looks like she chopped off most of Jessica's ombre colored ends, giving her healthier hair and a sleek short cut–what more could you ask for? Well before you decide to go shorter, you might want to make sure you're really ready to chop it all off. A fresh new haircut might seem fun until you realize you don't have the slightest clue how to maintain it. Here are a few things you might want to consider before taking the plunge!

Does it work with your face shape? Keep it mind that the shorter your cut, the more emphasis placed on your facial features. Make sure you go for a style that compliments your face shape, your neck, and your features. An oval face and a slender neck, like Jessica Alba's, can usually get away with most cuts.

Take texture into consideration: Think styling short hair is a breeze? Think again! Depending on your texture, that's not always the case. Look for a style that's going to enhance and work for your hair type, rather than against it. If you have curly or wavy hair, just know that a shorter cut will make those rizos tighter!

Know how to style it: If you'd rather hit the snooze button than wake up earlier to style your hair in the morning, then you might want to give your cut a second thought. Go for a haircut that you won't have issues maintaining and ask your stylist for a few pointers on how to style it.

You'll need to make regular salon appointments: Unlike long locks, if you want to keep your short style chic, you have to make a few more visits to your salon for regular trimming. This is key to maintaining your look.

It won't grow back overnight: Don't get a haircut thinking, "It'll just grow back." Depending on how short you go, it can be a while before you see your long hair again. Remember the average person grows about a half inch of hair per month. Do the math!
