I remember when my daughter's first tooth came out like it was yesterday–even though it's been seven long years since it happened. I also remember her own excitement when she was in first grade and her first tooth became wiggly. She couldn't wait for the Tooth Fairy and for the Ratoncito to come and take her tooth when it finally fell off! For me, it was a bittersweet moment. I was excited for her, but I was a bit sad that my firstborn was no longer a baby.
And yet, no amount of sadness would make think it'd be a good idea to grab her fallen tooth and have it turned into jewelry like some moms have started doing.

If it sounds crazy to you too, it's because it is! But at least one Etsy shop is offering a service whereby you send in your child's tooth and you get a back a silver mold that you can carry in a necklace or a bracelet for a cool $75. Just so you never ever forget your child's first tooth! Oh, and if you'd like something ever more unique, you can send in several teeth and get a pendant like the one in this photo:
Call me insensitive, but why would I want to do that? And, what about moms who have a few kids? Do you just add an initial to each mold to make sure you know which child it belongs to while you wear your necklace around your neck? Gross!
This doesn't mean I haven't kept my daughter's first baby tooth. In fact, I have it in a little box with the date it fell off on it and I plan on giving it to her when she gets older. I guess that can be considered just as creepy, except that I haven't taken it out of its box since I put it there last year.
Interestingly enough, I just found out that the notion of converting children's teeth into jewelry is not new at all and that, in fact, it's a common practice in some Latin American countries. My mother never did such thing, so I'd never heard of it. And, in all honesty, I think I would've been pretty freaked out if she had walked around with mine and my siblings teeth as bling!
