Sometimes I want to hang my head in shame, not for myself, but for the clueless and unkind people of the world. No, scratch that, in this case I'm talking about the people of the internet. Clearly, some have no shame, which makes me feel the shame for them. In October of last year, Doyin Richards, the father behind the very popular blog Daddy Doin' Work, posted a picture of himself with his two daughters that brought internet haters out like you would not believe. People were leaving hateful and at times very racist comments attacking Doyin Richards and questioning his reasons for posting the picture in the first place. Surely, the picture must be scandalous to cause such an uproar, right? I'll tell you what, why don't you look at it at tell me what you think.

That's it, that's the picture that he shared that managed to bring out the evil and hatred in so many people. Yeah, it's just a picture of a dad, doing his daughter's hair while carrying his other daughter in a baby carrier. Crazy offensive, right? NOT!!!
Richards says he posted the picture so that his wife would see that he was able to get his eldest's hair done while keeping his youngest happy. His wife was amused and when he shared it on social media so were a lot of other people. I mean it's sweet, it's a dad being a dad, doing the sort of things a dad should do. If it were a woman in the picture, it would have been no big deal. So what did the haters have to say?
Oh here are a few examples of comments or private messages that the photo garnered:
- "OK buddy, cute picture. Now why don't you hand the children back to their mom so you can go back to selling drugs or your bootleg rap CDs?"
- "So do you do this for all of your illegitimate kids?"
- "He probably rented those kids. They don't even look like him."
Wow, wow, wow! Do you see why I feel like I have to hang my head in shame for people who don't know any better?
So how did Richards respond to the hate? With class. He wrote a post called, "I Have a Dream" (yes, he borrowed the phrase from Dr. Martin Luther Kind Jr.) and in it he drops some knowledge that in 2013 should really be common knowledge, but apparently isn't.
The part that touched me the most was when he wrote, "I have a dream that people will view a picture like this and not think it's such a big deal." I share his dream and it is nothing short of a nightmare that ANYONE would take offense at a picture of a father doing his job!
