I have a cousin that no matter what she does can't seem to get her hair to grow past her shoulders. She's tried it all and these days she's relying on hair extensions to give her a little extra length. So what keeps certain woman from being able to grow long hair? Could it just be genetics? And what can we do to get the longest, most luxurious hair possible?

There's actually a number of reasons why you may not be seeing growth. And for most of these reasons there are solutions. So before you decided to invest in hair extensions here are some reasons why your isn't growing.
Breakage: Let me begin by informing you ladies that everyone's hair grows. In fact, the average woman's hair grows about half an inch a month. So whether it's fast or slow your hair should be growing nonetheless. If your hair doesn't seem to hit past a certain length, it might be due to breakage. Hair ends need to moisturized or they'll eventually dry up and break. Try doing a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week, like Neutrogena Triple Moisture Deep Recover Hair Mask ($7) and keep hydrated with a leave-in treatment, like It's a 10 Miracle Leave In Conditioner ($13).
Get a trim: If you want healthy hair growth, it's important to trim off those split ends every two to three months. Keep them moisturized by applying a dab of coconut oil or a treatment like, TRESemme Split Remedy Split End Sealing Serum ($5) to help seal in moisture.
Keep your scalp healthy: Excess oil and heavy hair styling products can clog your scalp's pores, stunting your hair's growth. Try using a clarifying shampoo at least once a week. I like Moroccanoil Clarifying Shampoo ($26).
Poor diet: Remember it's not just what you put on your hair, but what you put in the inside. If your not getting enough nourishment you can't expect to have a head full of healthy strands. Try maintaining a healthy diet and look for foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and biotin. Hair vitamins like Hair Infinity ($24) also help.
Stress: Believe it or not, stress many times is linked to lack of growth and hair loss. Try treating yourself with relaxed activities or give yourself a scalp massage every few days. It calms the nerves and stimulates hair follicles. Use a Scalp Massager ($3).
Genetics: Not everyone can have waist long hair. How long your hair can grow depends on your individual hair cycle growth phase which is largely determined by genetics. But a new healthy, hair routine can give you a few extra inches.
