I've been dying to try out dark purple lips ever since I spotted Jessica Alba rocking the trend recently. This deep plum hue is HUGE this season and best part is that it's universally flattering! Let's face it: when it comes to lipstick, finding a one-color-fits all is nearly impossible, even with classic reds. But this gorgeous wine shade looks great on almost every skin tone–especially medium and dark ones! Finally a bold, seasonal trend that works perfect for us Latinas!

So now that you know that everybody looks great in plum-colored lipstick, how do you nail this trend without looking goth? For those of your daring chicas willing to go dark, here are a few of my simple tips on how to successfully rock dark purple lips!
Exfoliate: Nothing looks worse than dark, flaky lips. You want to make sure you buff away any dead skin with a lip polish, like Bite Beauty Whipped Cherry Lip Scrub ($18).
Keep lips moisturized: Apply a hydrating lip balm immediately after exfoliating them to help lock in moisture. I always use Smith's Rosebud Salve ($6). It works every time!
Conceal your lips: Not all women have pink lips. In fact, some Latinas with medium or dark complexions have brown pigmentation on their labios. To prevent your natural lipcolor from interfering with your plum lipstick, try layering a concealer over your lips first. It will also help hold the color on longer. Try CoverGirl & Olay Concealer Balm ($8).
Use a lip liner: Dark lipstick colors tend to bleed easily. To keep your color in place, make sure to line your lips with a lip liner in the same shade first. I like Make Up For Ever Aqua Lip Waterproof LipLiner Pencil in Matte Dark Plum ($19). It stays on for hours!
Use a lip brush: For a precise application, use a lip brush to color in your pout. Sonia Kashuk Retractable Tools Lip Brush ($8) is a good cheap option. I recommend a creamy lipstick that's going to keep your lips looking smooth and glossed all day. Try Laura Mercier Rouge Nouveau Weightless Lip Colour in Sin ($24).
