A 10-year-old girl in the Dominican Republic is pregnant … and I don't know what to say. The little girl is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit for pregnant minors in San Cristobal, a southern province in the Dominican Republic, at the Regional Hospital Juan Pablo Pina. She's 10 and she's pregnant! The hospital is paying special attention to the pregnancy because of the high risk it presents to both the mother and baby. Did I mention that the mother is 10?! Ten-year-olds haven't even finished growing yet. This is truly a case of babies having babies. How did this happen!?

Dr. Miguel Angel Geraldino, the director of the hospital where the girl is being treated, has said that because of the large number of teenagers getting pregnant in the area, a special unit was created in the hospital so those particular cases could be monitored.
Again, I can't get over the fact that this girl is 10. She's not even a teenager.
Public Health and Social Assistance Minister Freddy Hidalgo considers the case of the pregnant 10-year-old a "real tragedy" and has ordered that the girl be given the necessary medical and psychological attention she needs at the hospital as well as giving instructions for her to receive help in her home.
I have no idea how this little girl came to be pregnant. When someone is that young, I always imagine the worst, but I truly have no details to go on. Understandably, because of her age it is very important that details like her name be kept confidential.
I didn't get pregnant until my late 30s and it was no piece of cake. I wish this little girl strength, health, support, and the best of luck.
