Bilingual bebés on board: 5 must-have books for parents raising bilingual kids

I've been raising bilingual kids for almost seven years now. While I feel like I know a lot about this topic not only because I'm living it because I write about it all the time, the truth is I still have some questions as the kids get older and we face different challenges. That's when I turn to some amazing books on raising bilingual children that have helped me in more than one occasion during my journey. Today, I'd like to share them with you.

Raising a Bilingual Child

A comprehensive handbook that gives parents an overview of why they should raise bilingual children as well as detailed steps to do so. Written by Barbara Zurer Pearson who has a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics, this books is full of information based on studies, but written in a way that's easy for any parent to understand.

This is another great book that's easy to read and a lot of useful resources including activities and tips for making sure your children stay bilingual. Written by Virginie Raguenaud a bilingual mom who is raising bilingual (English/French) twins.

Professor Francois Grosjean has dedicated his career to the topic o bilingualism and his expertise includes code-switching and borrowing – two of my favorite areas when it comes to bilingualism. This is my favorite book to recommend for those raising bilingual children. Grosjean's other books includes Life with Two Languages and Studying Bilinguals. Highly recommended!

This book is easy to follow and will teach you how it is that the brain learns more than one language, information about common myths surrounding bilingualism as well as answers to frequently asked questions. It was written by Naomi Steiner, M.D., a developmental-behavioral pediatrician at Tufts Medical Center Boston. Dr. Steiner, who's raising her own two multilingual children.

Disclaimer: I wrote this book last year together with my blogging partner. While I'm obviously tooting my own horn, I believe this book si worth reading because in it we talk about our real, everyday experiences as we raise our bilingual & bicultural children. We also included a historical perspective on Latinos in the U.S. as well as an entire chapter devoted to dual language/bilingual education.
