8 Steps to younger looking hands

We tend to dedicate a ton of time and money to caring for the skin on our face. But what about our hands? We often overlook them, that is until we suddenly notice discoloration, age spots, pronounced veins, and wrinkles. Believe it or not, our hands are one of the first parts of our bodies that start to show signs of aging. Not only are they constantly exposed to sun, wind and other harmful environmental factors, but we put them to work every day. Not to mention, the skin on our hands tends to get thinner over time.

What are we to do? Don't freak out! Luckily, there are ways to slow down the aging process and keep your hands looking young and beautiful. Check out a few of these simple tips to get you nourished, youthful hands ASAP!

Moisturize

The skin on your hands is more prone to dryness than anywhere else on your body. Keep them smooth and soft by constantly rubbing on a thick hand cream that includes nourishing ingredients like shea butter. I love Burt’s Bees Shea Butter Hand Cream ($13). I like to keep one in my purse, one at home and one at my work desk.

Try a hand scrub

Try rubbing your hands with a hand scrub (especially during the winter months) once a week. This will help remove any dry, dead skin cells leaving skin glowy and polished. Check out Bath & Body Work True Blue Spa 60-Second Manicure Hand Scrub ($12).

Always use SPF

To keep your skin protected from the sun and to prevent age spots and wrinkles, make sure to always apply sunscreen to your hands (even if you're indoors). Try a hand cream that contains SPF 30 or higher, like Deborah Lippmann Rich Girl Hand & Cuticle Cream ($28).

Use gloves

You should always wear gloves if you’re outside in the cold for long periods of time. But should also use hand gloves when you’re washing dishes, cleaning or gardening. This will help keep hands protected from harsh detergents or chemicals that can be tough on your skin. Try Glovables Pink Dishwashing Gloves ($14).

Spot-treat

Dab on a facial brightening cream to help fade age spots on your hands. Try Garnier Skin Renew Dark Spot Corrector ($15).

Chill with the water

Constant contact with hot water can strip your hands of natural oils, leaving them dry and dehydrated. To prevent the aging process from speeding up, wash hands instead with lukewarm or cool water when you can.

Splurge on a manicure

Even if you’re a pro at doing your own nails, every once in a while you should make a manicure appointment. Not only will a manicurist help clean up your cuticles, but a hand massage encourages blood flow through your hands, which helps keep skin radiant and firm.

Treat while you sleep

Keep your hands hydrated while you sleep by slipping into a pair of moisturizing gloves. I like Sephora Spa Gloves ($36). They are coated with a gel that includes grapeseed oil, jojoba oil and vitamin E that work to deeply nourish your hands and retain moisture.
